Asthislistimplies,readingandunderstandingapieceoftextrequiresfarmorethanapassiveunderstandingofthewordsandsentencesitcontains;

itrequiresactiveengagementwiththetext,askingquestions,formulatingandevaluatinghypothesesandreflectingontherelationshipoftheparticulartexttoothertextsand 

information.

EachReadingComprehensionquestionisbasedonapassagethatmayrangeinlengthfromoneparagraphtoseveralparagraphs.Thetestcontainsapproximately10passages,themajorityofwhichareoneparagraphinlengthandonlyoneortwoofwhichareseveralparagraphslong.Passagesaredrawnfromthephysicalsciences,biologicalsciences,socialsciences,business,artsandhumanitiesandeverydaytopicsandarebasedonmaterialfoundinbooksandperiodicals,bothacademicand 

nonacademic.

Typically,abouthalfofthequestionsonthetestwillbebasedonpassages,andthenumberofquestionsbasedonagivenpassagecanrangefromonetosix.Questionscancoveranyofthetopicslistedabove,fromthemeaningofaparticularwordtoassessingevidencethatmightsupportorweakenpointsmadeinthepassage.Many,butnotall,ofthequestionsarestandardmultiple-choicequestions,inwhichyouarerequiredtoselectasinglecorrectanswer;

othersaskyoutoselectmultiplecorrectanswers;

andstillothersaskyoutoselectasentencefromthe 

passage.

∙Readingpassagesaredrawnfrommanydifferentdisciplinesandsources,soyoumayencountermaterialwithwhichyouarenotfamiliar.Donotbediscouragedifyouencounterunfamiliarmaterial;

allthequestionscanbeansweredonthebasisoftheinformationprovidedinthepassage.However,ifyouencounterapassagethatseemsparticularlyhardorunfamiliar,youmaywanttosaveitfor 

last.

∙Readandanalyzethepassagecarefullybeforetryingtoansweranyofthequestions,andpayattentiontocluesthathelpyouunderstandlessexplicitaspectsofthe 

passage.
