EachReadingComprehensionquestionisbasedonapassagethatmayrangeinlengthfromoneparagraphtoseveralparagraphs.Thetestcontainsapproximately10passages,themajorityofwhichareoneparagraphinlengthandonlyoneortwoofwhichareseveralparagraphslong.Passagesaredrawnfromthephysicalsciences,biologicalsciences,socialsciences,business,artsandhumanitiesandeverydaytopicsandarebasedonmaterialfoundinbooksandperiodicals,bothacademicand
nonacademic.
Typically,abouthalfofthequestionsonthetestwillbebasedonpassages,andthenumberofquestionsbasedonagivenpassagecanrangefromonetosix.Questionscancoveranyofthetopicslistedabove,fromthemeaningofaparticularwordtoassessingevidencethatmightsupportorweakenpointsmadeinthepassage.Many,butnotall,ofthequestionsarestandardmultiple-choicequestions,inwhichyouarerequiredtoselectasinglecorrectanswer;
othersaskyoutoselectmultiplecorrectanswers;
andstillothersaskyoutoselectasentencefromthe
passage.
