Thisfrighteningscenarioisinparttheconsequenceofadramaticincreaseoverthelastquartercenturyinthedevelopmentofoncenaturalareasofwetmarshland;
homenotonlytofrogsbuttoallmannerofwildlife.However,asyet,therearenoobviousreasonswhycertainfrogspeciesaredisappearingfromrainforestsinAustraliathathavebarely
beentouchedbyhumanhand.Themysteryisunsettlingtosaytheleast,foritisknownthatamphibianspeciesareextremelysensitivetoenvironmentalvariationsintemperatureandmoisturelevels.ThedangeristhatplanetEarthmightnotonlyloseavitallinkintheecologicalfoodchain(frogskeeppopulationsofotherwisepestilentinsectsatmanageablelevels),butwemightbeincreasingouroutputofairpollutantstolevelsthatmayhavealreadybecomeirreversible.Frogscouldbeinadvertentlywarningusofacatastrophe.
Anexampleofaspeciesoffrogthat,atfarasisknown,hasbecomeextinct,istheplatypusfrog.Likethewell-knownAustralianmammalitwasnamedafter,itexhibitedsomeverystrangebehaviour;
insteadofgivingbirthtotadpolesinthewater,itraiseditsyoungwithinitsstomach.Thebabyfrogswereactuallybornfromoutoftheirmothersmouth.Discoveredin1981,lessthantenyearslaterthefroghadcompletelyvanishedfromthecrystalclearwatersofBooloumbaCreeknearQueenslandsSunshineCoast.Unfortunately,thisfreakofnatureisnottheonlyfrogspeciestohavebeenlostinAustralia.Sincethe1970s,nolessthaneightothershavesufferedthesamefate.
Onetheorythatseemstofitthefactsconcernsthedepletionoftheozonelayer,awelldocumentedphenomenonwhichhasledtoasharpincreaseinultravioletradiationlevels.TheozonelayerismeanttoshieldtheEarthfromUVrays,butincreasedradiationmaybehavingagreatereffectuponfrogpopulationsthanpreviouslybelieved.Anothertheoryisthatworldwidetemperatureincreasesareupsettingthebreedingcyclesoffrogs.
