Thereareonlyaround700Mediterraneanmonksealsleftinthewildandthespeciesislistedasendangered.Inthepast,theyusedbeachesalongthenorthcoastofCyprustobreedbuthumanactivitiessuchastourismhavegraduallyforcedthemtomoveelsewhere.In2007,asurveyidentified39possiblebreedingcaves.Itwasonlyin2013,however,thatayoungsealwasspottedintheareaaroundthecaves.Thisconfirmation(证实)thatsealswerebreedingintheareainspiredtheteamtosetuptheirspecialcamerasin2016.Knowingaboutthesebreedingcaveswillhelpexpertstotrackthesealpopulationmoreaccurately.

Theresearchersnowwanttogivethesealsintheareabetterprotection.They'
