NormanBethunewasbornin1890.hebecameadoctorin1916andwenttoSpainin1936totreatthewoundedsoldiersduringthewasthere.Hesoonrealizedthatmanypeopleweredyingbecausetheydidnotgettohospitalquicklyenough.DrBethunedevelo0pednewwaysoftakingcareofthesick.Heinventedspecialmedicaltoolstouseoutsidehospitalsandclosetothefightingareassothatdoctorscouldtreatthewoundedmorequickly.Hisinventionssavedmanylives.

In1938,DrBethunecametoChinaandhelpedtreatthewoundedduringtheAnti-JapaneseWar.Atthattime,therewerefewdoctors,sohehadtoworkveryhardonhisown.HisexperienceoftreatingpeopleinSpainwasusefulinChina.Hedevelopedtrainingcourseforlocaldoctorsandnurses,andwrotebookssothattheycouldlearnabouthowthetreatedthesick.

DrBethuneoftenworkedveryhardwithoutrestingortakingcareofhimself.Once,heevenworkedforsixty-ninehourswithoutstoppingandmanagedtosaveoverahundredlives.Onedayin1939,hecuthisfingerduringanoperation,buthecontinuedhisworkwithouttreatingit.Intheend,hediedofhiswound.
