Therunnerswereallinjury-freeatthetimeofthestudyandran31mileseachweek.Dr.Herman’steamhadeachparticipantrunonatreadmillthreeseparatetimes.Thefirsttimewaswithoutanydistractions.Thesecondtimeaddedavisualdistraction,duringwhichtherunnersconcentratedonascreendisplayingdifferentlettersindifferentcolorswiththerunnerhavingtonotewhenaspecificletter-colorcombinationappeared.Thethirdtimeaddedanauditorydistractionsimilartothevisualdistraction,withtherunnerhavingtonotewhenacertainwordwasspokenbyacertainvoice.

Whencomparedtorunningwithoutdistractions,theparticipantsappliedforcefastertotheirleftandrightlegscalledloadingrate,withauditoryandvisualdistractions.Theyalsoexperiencedanincreasedamountofforcefromthegroundonbothlegs,calledgroundreactionforce,withauditorydistractions.Finally,therunnerstendedtobreatheheavierandhavehigherheartrateswithvisualandauditorydistractionsthanwithoutanydistractionsatall.
