Untilthe1990s,onewidelyheldtheorywasthattherockswerestuckinsheets(片)oficethatwerebeingblownacrossthedesert.(DeathValleydoesgetcoldenoughforicetoformonsomewinternights.)However,researchlatershowedthattomovesuchlargeicesheets,thewindwouldhavetoblowathundredsofmilesperhour.TherearestrongwindsinDeathValley—butnotthatstrong.
Then,in2006,ascientistnamedRalphLorenzcameupwithanewtheory.Hesuggestedthatinthewinter,thickiceformsaroundtherocks.Whenthegroundbeginstothaw(解冻),therocks,wearingice,sailalong,leavingtrailsbehindthem.Lorenzputhistheorytothetestinhisownkitchen.Hedroppedarockintoadish,addedalittlewater,andstuckthedishinhisfridge.Later,hetookouttherockandplaceditinadishofwaterwithsandatthebottom.Sureenough,withjustabreath,Lorenzwasabletosendtherockmovingacrossthewater—leavingatrailinthesandasitmoved.
