PerraulttookBuckandCurlydowntothebottomoftheship.Theretheymetanotherman,Francois.PerraultwasaFrench-CanadianbutFrancoiswashalf-Indian,tallanddark.BucklearntquicklythatPerraultandFrancoiswerefairmen,calmandhonest.Andtheykneweverythingaboutdogs.

theywerelikewolves.InafewminuteshelearntthisfromwatchingCurly.Shetriedtomakefriendswithadog,abigone,althoughnotasbigasshewas.Therewasnowarning.ThedogjumpedonCurly,histeethclosedtogetherthenhejumpedawayandCurly'

sdeathoftencamebacktoBuckinhisdreams.Heunderstoodthatonceadogwasdownontheground,hewasdead.HealsorememberedSpitzlaughingandfromthatmomenthehatedhim.
