Abstract
Background
ImmigrantLatinodaylaborersworkinginresidentialconstructionareatparticularlyhighriskoffatalandnon-fataltraumaticinjuryandbenefitfromtargetedtraining.
Objective
Tounderstandtheimpactofaparticipatory,peer-facilitatedhealthandsafetyawarenesstrainingcustomizedtotheneedsofLatinodaylaborers.
Methods
Baselinesurveysexploringexposures,PPEuse,attitudes,workpracticesandwork-relatedinjurieswerecollectedfrommorethan300NewJerseyLatinodaylaborersinconstructionpriortotheirparticipationinaoneday(minimumofsixhour)Spanishlanguagehealthandsafetytrainingclass.Theclasses,ledbytrainedworkertrainers,engagedparticipantsinaseriesoftasksrequiringteamworkandactiveproblemsolvingfocusedonapplyingsafepracticestosituationstheyencounterattheirworksites.Follow-upsurveysweredifficulttoobtainamongmobiledaylaborers,andwerecollectedfrom70men(22%responserate)2-6 monthsfollowingtraining.Chi-squareanalysiswasusedtocomparepre-andpost-interventionPPEuse,selfprotectiveactions,andself-reportedinjuryrates.Focusgroupsandin-depthinterviewsaddressingsimilarissuesprovidedacontextfordiscussingthesurveyfindings.
Results
Atbaseline,themajorityofdaylaborerswhoparticipatedinthisstudyreportedgreatconcernaboutthehazardsoftheirworkandwerereceptivetolearningabouthealthandsafetydespitelimitedinfluenceoveremployers.Changesfrombaselinetofollow-uprevealedstatisticallysignificantdifferencesintheuseofcertaintypesofPPE(hardhats,workbootswithsteeltoes,safetyharnesses,andvisiblesafetyvests),andinthefrequencyofself-protectiveworkpractices(e.g.,tryingtofindoutmoreaboutjobhazardsonyourown).Therewasalsoasuggestivedecreaseinself-reportedinjuries(receivinganinjuryatworkseriousenoughthatyouhadtostopworkingfortherestoftheday)post-trainingbasedonsmallnumbers.Sixty-sixpercentofworkerssurveyedpost-trainingreportedsharinginformationfromtheirsafetyworkbookwithfriendsandco-workers.Focusgroupsandinterviewresultsgenerallyconfirmedthequantitativefindings.
Conclusions
Participatory,peerledtrainingtailoredtotheneedsofconstructiondaylaborersmayhaveapositiveeffectonLatinoimmigrantworkers’attitudes,workpractices,andselfreportedinjuryrates,butmajorchangeswouldrequireemployerengagement.
ImpactonIndustry
Healthandsafetyresearchershaveidentifiedreducingthenumberoftraumaticinjuriesamongtheimmigrantconstructionworkforceasanincreasinglyimportantpriority.Thisprojectprovidesonemodelforcollaborationbetweenuniversity-basedresearchers,aunion,andacommunity-basedorganization.Thespecificelementsofthisproject—participatorycurriculumcustomizedtotheneedsofdaylaborersinresidentialconstruction,trainingdaylaborerstofacilitatetrainingclasses,andinvolvingpeerleadersinoutreachandresearch—couldbeadaptedbyotherorganizations.ThefindingsofthisstudysuggestthattheLatinodaylaborershaveastronginterestinandsomeabilitytoactonhealthandsafetyinformation.Widespreadimplementationofthistypeoftraining,especiallyifsupportedwithcooperationfromresidentialcontractors,couldleadtoreducedratesoftraumaticinjuryintheresidentialconstructionindustry.
