NelsonMandelaisaformerpresidentofSouthAfricafromMay1994toJune1999.Heisoneofthegreatmoralandpoliticalleadersofthattime.Heisaninternationalherowhoselifelongcontributiontothefightofanti-apartheid(反对种族隔离)activitiesinSouthAfricawonhimtheNobelPeacePrize.Apartfromtheglory,hesuffered27yearsimprisonment(监禁)whichwasfromAugust1962toFebruary1990.

EarlyLife
MandelawasbornonJuly18,1918inMvezo,asmallvillagelocatedinthedistrictofUmtata(乌姆塔塔,南非东南部城市,特兰斯凯).HisfatherwasachiefofthetownofMvezo.Hisfatherhadfourwivesand13children(4boysand9girls).Mandelwasborntohisthirdwife.

Nelsonishisfirstname,Hewasthefirstmemberofhisfamilytoattendaschool,andhisteachergavehimtheEnglishname“Nelson”.Rolihlahlaishisgivenname.Itmeanstopullabranchofatree,kindoftroublemaker.Mandelaishissurname.OneoftheKing’ssons,namedMandelawashisgrandfather,andthenMandelabecamethesourceofhissurname.
Hisfatherdiedoftuberculosis(矽肺结核)whenhewas9yearsold.Hewasareallysmartstudentwhenhewasatschool.Hegothiscertificateintwoyearsinsteadoftheusual3years.Hewasanexcellentstick-fighterasachild,andhelikedboxingandlong-distancerunning.Later,hewasknowntoenjoyplayingfootballanddancingaswell.
HesethismindtobealawyerbecauseofaProfessorwhowasveryarrogant(傲慢的)tosaythatblackpeoplecouldn’tbegoodlawyers.Fromthenon,hedeterminedtobealawyerandstudiedlawinuniversity.Hethoughtlawwasagoodweapontoreleaseblackpeoplefromthepoliticalbondage(奴役)ofwhitepeople.Whenhewas23,hewentintothecity.HeescapedthemarriagewhichtheRegent(摄政者)arrangedforhim.
Anti-ApartheidActivities
BlackSouthAfricanshadfewrights,andtheywouldhavebeenlessaftertheelectionof1948.Blackswerecompelled(强迫)toliveindifferentpartsofthecity,andwereforcedtoliveinfarworseconditionsthanwhites.MixedmarriageswereforbiddenandAfricansfacedarrestiftheydidn’tcarrypassbooks.Thosearethesymbolofblackoppression.
Mandelabegantofightback.Hejoinedinthesuccessfulmassboycott(抵制)ofthecity’sbusesafteranincreaseinfares.In1944,MandelatookpartintheANCYouthLeague,whichwasadoptedbytheANCin1949.Itisthemainblackpoliticalgroup.MandelathoughtheshouldbetheleadertoleadtheblackAfricans’liberation.
In1961,MandelabecametheleaderoftheANC’sarmedwing.Heorganizedsabotage(破坏)campaignsagainstmilitaryandgovernmenttargetstoendapartheid(种族隔离).
MandeladescribedthattheANC,initsstruggleagainstapartheid,alsoviolatedhumanrights,sharplycriticizedthoseinhisownpartywhoattemptedorremovedstatementssupportingthisfactfromthereportsoftheTruthandReconciliationCommission(真相与和解委员会).
Theconsequenceofanti-apartheidactivitywasthatMandelaandANCpartymemberswerebarred(阻止)fromenteringtheUnitedStates,excepttheUnitedNationsheadquartersinManhattan.TheirSouthAfricanapartheidregimewasregardasterrorism,theywereregardedasterrorists.
PrisonLife
AfterMandelaledtheseanti-apartheidactivities,hespent27yearsintheprison.Hislifeinprisonwasreallyastruggle,andhard.Hestillsaidthathewouldnevergiveupfightingfortheblacksthoughhewasimprisoned.
HewasarrestedonAugust5,1962.Atthattime,hewassentencedto5yearsinprisonwithhardlabor.InJune1963,MandelawastakentotheRivoniaTrial.Finally,thejudgedeclaredthatthe5years’prisonlifebecamealifelongimprisonment.
Duringhisyearsinprison,Nelson’sreputationgrewsteadily.HewasregardedasthemostsignificantblackleaderinSouthAfrica.Heconsistentlyrefusedtocompromisehispoliticalpositiontoobtainhisfreedom.
Whilehewasinprison,therewere3peoplewatchingonhim,sincehewasaspecialterrorist.Hedidhaveatoughtimebydoinghardlaborthingsintheprison.Onasunnyday,theglarefromthewhiterockisblinding,buthewasrefusedtheuseofdarkglasses.Hiseyesightneverfullyrecovered.Whatwasworse,hewasallowedonevisitorandoneletterevery6months.Forhim,thosewerejustsmallthings.Withhispersistence,hebecametheprisoners’leaderandspokesman.Theprisonbecameapoliticalworkshopforthem.
Nowadays,RobbenIsland,offthecoastofCapeTownwhereMandelawasimprisonedisamajortourisminSouthAfrica.ThevisitorsaretotallyattractedtogotherebyMandela’sstory.
Freedom
In1990,Mandelawasreleased.Hewasknownasoneofthemostfamouspoliticiansontheplanet.
Thoughhewasinprison,hewasstilltheglobalfocus.Hischarismaandinfluencewereallovertheworld.In1981,abouttenthousandFrenchpeopleappliedfortheSouthAfrica’sembassyinFrancetoreleaseMandela.In1982,intheglobal53countries’2000mayorsputtheirsignaturesforgettingMandela’sfreedom.In1983,inBritain,therewere78councilorsandmorethan50mayorsheldaparadetoaskBritainPrimetostressSouthAfricatogiveMandelafreedom.
OnFebruary11,1990,Mandelawasreleasedwithnoreason.ThegovernmentofSouthAfricacouldn’tfightfortheinternationalcampaign.
Afterhisrelease,hestillworkedhardandsucceededinendingtheapartheidera,savingSouthAfricafromathreatenedcivilwar.Itshowedhowskillfulandcapableheisinpoliticalaspect.Mandela’sleadershipgotthroughalotofnegotiations,aswellashisrelationshipwithPresidentF.W.de.Klerk.TheyweretogetherawardedtheNobelPeacePrizein1993.
NelsonMandelasucceededinbecomingthefirstblackPresidentinSouthAfricaonApril27,1994.Asapresident,hedidhisbesttoreconcilewithAfrikaners.HedelightedAfrikanersbywearingaSpringbokshirtatarugbywhichisAfrikaners’favoritesport.The1995RugbyWorldCupinSouthAfricawaswidelyseenasamajorstepinthereconciliationofAfrikanersandblacks.
Sincethen,forMandela,fortheblacks,theyreallygotfreedomfromAfrikaners.
PersonalLife
ForMandela,hispubliclifewashard,butsuccessful.Forhisprivatelife,itwascompletelyatragedy.Hehasbeenmarriedfor3times.Hehad6children,but3ofthemdiedduringMandela’slifetime.
Mandela’sfirstwife,EvelynMase,wasayoungcousinofhisfriend’s.ShewasanursewhoworkedattheJohannesburgGeneralHospital.Theygotmarriedin1944.Theywereverydifferent.Shewasveryreligiousandhadlittleinterestinpolitics.Mandelawasalwaysabsentathomebecauseofthepolitics.Thatwasthemainreasonwhytheygotdivorcedin1957.Theyhad4children,twosonsandtwodaughters.HisfirstsonThembidiedinacarcrashandhissecondsonMkgathodiedofAIDS.TheirdaughterMakaziwadiedattheageof9months,theirseconddaughterwasalsocalledMakaziwawhoisstillalive.
