Freedomisoneoftheimportantfeaturesofwesterncivilization.Thisfreedomisrightstodocertainthings.Whenapersondoessomethingthatothersthinkstrange,BritishandAmericanpeoplewilloftensay,“It’safreecountry,”meaningthatalthoughtheydisagreewiththechoicetheystillthinktheotherpersonhastherighttomakehisownchoice.

InBritainandtheUSthemostbasicrightsinclude:

freedomofexpression(=freedomtosayorwriteanything),

freedomofchoice(=freedomtomakedecisionsaboutyourownlife)

andfreedomofworship(=freedomtopracticeanyreligion).

ThistermreferstoamemberoftheMethodistChurch,thelargestoftheProtestantFreeChurchesinBritainandtheUS.Itwasestablishedin1739byJohnWesleyaspartoftheChurchofEnglandbutitbecameseparatefromitin1795.ItwasintroducedintotheUSinthe18thcenturyandtodayhasover50millionmembersaroundtheworld.Itemphasizedtheimportanceofmoralissues,bothpersonalandsocial.

Itisanovel(1852)bytheUSwriterHarrietBeecherStowewhichincreasedsupportforthemovementtofreeslaves.ItisaboutakindslavecalledTomwhoisbadlytreatedandfinallykilledbySimonLegree.Tom’sdaughterLittleEvaalsodies,andanotherwell-knowncharacterinthenovelistheslavechildTopsy.

ThenameUncleTomissometimesusedasaninsulttodescribeanAfrican-Americanwhohastoomuchrespectforwhitepeople.
