Inthefirsteverstudyofitskind,UrsulaBeermannoftheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,andWillibaldRuchoftheUniversityofZurichstudied70psychologystudentstogauge(测量)theirabilitytolaughatthemselves.Thefindingssupportwhathaslongbeenbelieved:

thatbeingabletolaughatoneselfisnotonlyadistincttrait,butisalsolinkedwithhavinganoptimisticpersonalityandgoodmoodandmaybethefoundationforagoodsenseofhumor.

Participantsinthestudywereaskedtoratetheirabilitytoseethehumorintheirownplight.Theyalsodesignatedoneortwofriendstoratethemonthesamecharacteristic.

Whilethestudentswerefillingoutthesequestionnairesonaputer,itscamerasurreptitiouslyphotographedtheirfaces.ThepictureswerethenalteredusingMacPhotoBoothsoftwaretomakethemlooklikedistorted,funhousemirror(哈哈镜)images.

Afterward,thestudyparticipantswereaskedtorateirregularphotosofpeopletheydidn'

tknow.Theirownstretchedoutimageswererandomlyinsertedintothesequence—andthat'

swheretheexperimentreallystarted.Participantswerevideotapedastheyviewedtheimagestoseewhethertheylaughedorsmiledatthemselves.Thevideoswereanalyzed,usingawellstudiedratingsystemofemotionalexpression,toseehowgenuinetheparticipants'

expressionsofhumorwere.

Eightypercentofparticipantsgenuinelysmiledorlaughedatleastoncewhenseeingtheirownsillyimage.However,thosewhoclaimedtohavetheabilitytolaughatthemselves—andwhosefriends'

assessmentsmatchedtheirowngenuinelylaughedandsmiledmoreoftenandmoreintenselythantheothers.

Interestingly,however,people'

ssenseoftheirownabilitytolaughatthemselveswasonlysomewhatrelatedwiththeirfriends'

ratings,suggestingthatpeopleeitherthinkthey'

rebetteratitthantheyactuallyareorthattheywanttopresentthemselvesthisway.

Thestudyfoundthatpeople'

sabilitytolaughatthemselveshadnobearingonhowmuchtheylaughedorsmiledinresponsetothedistortedimagesofothers—thatsuggeststhatthephenomenonisadistinctcharacteristic,onelinkedwithyourownmoodandpersonality,ratherthanthetendencytosimplyfindsillyimagesfunny.Thefindingalsoemphasizesthelinkbetweenhumorandcautiousness.

Participantswhowereabletolaughatthemselvesmorealsotendedtobemorecheerfulandlessseriousoverall,andwereinbettermoodsonthedayoftheexperiment,thestudyfound.
