2008.Allbuttwopiecessold,fetchingmorethan£70m,arecordforasalebyasingleartist.Itwasalast

victory.Astheauctioneercalledoutbids,inNewYorkoneoftheoldestbanksonWallStreet,Lehman

Brothers,filedforbankruptcy.

Theworldartmarkethadalreadybeenlosingmomentumforawhileafterrisingbewilderinglysince

2003.Atitspeakin2007itwasworthsome$65billion,reckonsClareMcAndrew,founderofArts

Economics,aresearchfirm—doublethefigurefiveyearsearlier.Sincethenitmayhavecomedownto$50

billion.Butthemarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbringstogethergreatwealth,

enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewotherindustries.

IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMrHirst‘sale,spendingofanysortbecamedeeply

unfashionable,especiallyinNewYork,wherethebail-outofthebankscoincidedwiththelossofthousands

ofjobsandthefinancialdemiseofmanyart-buyinginvestors.Intheartworldthatmeantcollectorsstayed

awayfromgalleriesandsalerooms.Salesofcontemporaryartfellbytwo-thirds,andinthemost

overheatedsector—forChinesecontemporaryart—theyweredownbynearly90%intheyearto

November2008.Withinweekstheworld‘stwobiggestauctionhouses,Sotheby‘sandChristie‘s

outnearly$200minguaranteestoclientswhohadplacedworksforsalewiththem.

ThecurrentdownturnintheartmarketistheworstsincetheJapanesestoppedbuyingImpressionists

attheendof1989,amovethatstartedthemostseriouscontractioninthemarketsincetheSecondWorld

War.Thistimeexpertsreckonthatpricesareabout40%downontheirpeakonaverage,thoughsomehave

beenfarmorefluctuant.ButEdwardDolman,Christie‘schiefexecutive,says:

―I‘mprettycon

Whatmakesthisslumpdifferentfromthelast,hesays,isthattherearestillbuyersinthemarket,

whereasintheearly1990s,wheninterestrateswerehigh,therewasnodemandeventhoughmany
