LaterthateveningtheheadmonkwenttocheckontheBuddha.Heshinedhisflash-lightundertheoilclothtoseeiftheBuddhawasstayingdry.Asthelightreachedthecrack,henoticedalittlebeamshiningbackandthoughtitstrange.Ashetookacloserlookatthisbeamoflight,hewonderediftheremightbesomethingunderneaththeclay.Hewenttofetchachiselandhammerfromthemonasteryandbegantochipawayattheclay.Asheknockedoffpiecesofclay,thelittlebeamgrewbrighterandbigger.Manyhoursoflaborwentbybeforethemonkstoodfacetofacewiththeextraordinarysolid-goldBuddha.
Historiansbelievethatseveralhundredyearsbeforetheheadmonk’sdiscovery,thearmywasabouttoinvadethecountry.Themonks,realizingthattheircountrywouldsoonbeattacked,coveredtheirpreciousgoldenBuddhawithanoutercoveringofclayinordertokeeptheirtreasurefrombeingrobbedbytheenemy.
Unfortunately,itappearsthattheenemykilledallthemonks,andthewell-keptsecretofthegoldenBuddharemaineduncovereduntilthedayin1957.
AsIflewhomeIbegantothinktomyself,“WeareallliketheclayBuddhacoveredwithashellofhardnesscreatedoutoffear,andyetunderneatheachofusisa‘goldenBuddha’,agoldenChrist,ora‘goldenspirit,’whichisourrealself.Somewherealongtheway,betweentheagesoftwoandnine,webegintocoverupour’goldenspirit,’ournaturalself.Muchlikethemonkwiththehammerandthechisel,ourtasknowistodiscoverourtruespiritonceagain.”
