TheJamestownRediscoveryFoundationatHistoricJamestowneandtheSmithsonian’sMuseumofNaturalHistoryannouncedthatthesettlersheldhighleadershippositions.Themen,Rev.RobertHunt,Capt.GabrielArcher,SirFerdinandoWainman,andCapt.WilliamWest,allplayedaroleintheJamestownsettlement.Afterbeinglosttohistoryformorethan400years,thediscoveryoftheirremainsprovidesnewcluesabouttheirlifeandtheimportanceofreligioninthe1600s.

“Thisisaveryimportantdiscovery,”JamestownRediscoveryFoundationPresidentJamesHornsaidinastatement.“ThesemenwereamongthefirstfoundersofEnglishAmerica.”

About100peoplesettledalongtheJamesRiverinwhatwouldbeethefirstEnglishsettlementin1607.Duringthattime,settlersinJamestownwerefacedwithfamineanddisease.ThecolonywasnearlywipedoutduetoconflictwithNativeAmericansintheareaandwithotherEnglishsettlers.

“Theylivedanddiedatahardtimeinthehistoryofthesettlement,whenJamestownalmostendedinfailure,”Hornsaid.“Thebonesofthesemenhelpfillinthestoriesoftheirlives.”

TheSmithsonianandtheRediscoveryFoundationfoundtheremainsinNovemberof2013.Scientistsused3-Dtechnologytolocatetheexactgravesitesofthemen.Theteamwantedtoidentifyitsfindingsbeforeannouncingthediscovery.Theyidentifiedthemenusinghistoricalrecordsandstudiedth
