1.1.Thisprocedureisappliedtodetectcracksandotherdiscontinuitiesonornearthesurfaceofferromagneticmaterials,usingwetmagneticparticleandACorDCyoketechniquewithcontinuousmagnetizationmethod
1.2.ThisprocedureisappliedtoweldsandmaterialsofASMECodepressurevesselsfabricatedaccordingtoASMECodeSectionⅧDivision1.
2.QualificationofNDEPersonnel
AllpersonnelperformingmagneticparticleexaminationshallbequalifiedandcertifiedinaccordancewiththerequirementsofHT’sWrittenPracticeforNDEPersonnelTraining,Examination,QualificationandCertificationbasedontherequirementsof“SNT-TC-1A”(CurrentCodeacceptededition)
ThisprocedureshallbesupplementedbyMAGNETICPARTICLEEXAMINATIONINSTRUCTIONwhichshallbeissuedtoeveryproducttobeexaminedandinwhichmoredetailparametersarespecified.TheInstructionshallbepreparedbylevelⅡ,approvedbylevelⅢNDEexaminer,

Mixingratioofratermediummagneticsuspensionis11.0-22.0gmagneticslurryper1000mlwater.
4.3.3ConcentrationofWetMagneticparticleSuspension
TheconcentrationisnormallydeterminedbymeasuringitssettlingvolumethroughtheuseofanASMEpear-shapecentrifugetube.
Beforesampling,runthesuspensionforatleast30-min.toassurethoroughmixingofallparticles.Takea100mlportionofthesuspensionandallowittosettleapproximately30min.Thevolumesettlingoutatthebottomofthetubeisindicativeoftheparticleconcentrationinthebath.Bathconcentrationshallbeform1.2to2.4mlper100mlvehicles.ThecalibrationshallbeperformedbyMTlevelⅡorⅢandreviewedbyMTlevelⅢNDEExaminer.ThecalibrationresultsshallberecordedonCALIBRATIONRECORDFORSUSPENSIONCONCENTRATION.
4.4Illumination
Whennaturallightisnotenoughforexaminationandevaluation,adequateilluminationisrequiredensuringadequatesensitivityduringtheexaminationandevaluation.
5.SurfacePreparation
5.1Satisfactoryresultsareusuallyobtainedwhenthesurfaceisintheas-welded,as-rolled,as-cast,oras-forgedconditions.However,surfacepreparationbygrindingormachiningmaybenecessarywheresurfaceirregularitiescouldmaskindicationsduetodiscontinuities.
5.2Priortomagneticparticleexamination,thesurfacetobeexaminedandalladjacentareaswithinatleast1in.(25mm)shallbedriedandfreeofalldirt,grease,lint,andscale,weldingfluxandspatter,oilorotherextraneousmatterthatcouldinterferewiththeexamination.
5.3Cleaningofthetestsurfacemaybeaccomplishedbydetergents,organicsolvents,ormechanicalmeans.
5.4.Whencoatingisleftontheareasofthepartbeingexamined,allcoatingshallberemovedpriortoexamination
LevelⅡexaminershallperformmagneticexaminationinaccordancewiththerequirementsoftheInstruction,andshallrecordexaminationdataontheMAGNETICPARTICLEEXAMINATIONREPORT.Thetemperatureofthewetmagneticparticlesuspensionandthesurfaceofthepartshallnotexceed135℉(57.3℃).
6.1MagnetizingTechnique
TheACorDCyoketechniqueshallbeappliedtodetectdiscontinuitiesonthesurfaceofthepart.Exceptformaterials1/4in.orless,ACyokesaresuperiortodetectsurfacediscontinuities.
6.2.MethodofExamination
Examinationshallbedonebythe“wetmagneticparticlecontinuousmethod;
thatis,themagnetizingcurrentremainsonwhiletheexaminationmediumisbeingappliedandwhileexcessoftheexaminationmediumisbeingremoved.Thedurationofthemagnetizingcurrentistypicallyontheorderof1-3s.
6.3ApplicationofwetmagneticParticles
Wetmagneticparticlebathshallbeappliedbysparing,brushingorflowingovertheareatobeexaminedduringtheapplicationofthemagnetizingfield.Caremustbetakentopreventapplicationbeforeremovingthemagneticfield.
6.4DirectionofMagnetization
Eachareamustbemagnetizedinatleasttwodirectionsapproximatelyatrightangletoeachothersothatalldiscontinuitiesonthesurfaceofpartmaybedetectable(seeFig.2).Theindicationsarenotnormallyobtainedwhendiscontinuitiesareparalleltoappliedmagneticfield.
6.5ExaminationCoverage
Allexaminationshallbeconductedwithsufficientoverlaptoassure100%coverageattherequiredsensitivity.Theexaminationareashallbemarkedwithlinetosatisfy100%coverageasshowninFig.2.
6.6MagnetizingCurrent
Alternatingordirectmagnetizingcurrentshallbeusedtoestablishpartmagnetization.
6.7MagneticFieldStrengthforYokeTechnique
Theliftingpowerrelatestotheelectromagneticstrengthoftheyoke.Alternatingcurrentelectromagneticyokeshallhavealiftingpowerofatleast10lb(44.5N)atthemaximumpolespacingthatwillbeused.Directcurrentelectromagneticyokeshallhavealiftingpowerofatleast40lb(178N)atthemaximumpolespacingthatwillbeused.
6.8.EvaluationofSystemSensitivity
Whenitisnecessarytoverifytheadequacyordirectionofthemagnetizingfield,themagneticparticlefieldindicatordescribedinTable2shallbeusedbypositioningtheindicatoronthesurfacetobeexamined.Asuitablefluxorfieldstrengthisindicatedwhenaclearlydefinedlineofmagneticparticlesformsacrossthecopperfaceoftheindicatorwhenthemagneticparticlesareappliedsimultaneouslywiththemagneticforce.Whenaclearlydefinedlineofparticlesisnotformed,orisnotformedinthedesireddirection.Themagnetizingtechniqueshallbechangedoradjusted.
LevelⅡorⅢNDEexaminershallobserveandevaluateindicationsinaccordancewiththeacceptancestandardsofASMECode,andshallrecordevaluationresultontheMAGNETICPARTICLEEXAMINATIONREPORT
7.1.Theilluminationduringobservationandevaluationshallsatisfyrequirementofpara.4.4.
7.2Discontinuitiesonthesurfaceareindicatedbyretentionoftheexaminationmedium.However,localizedsurfaceirregularitiesduetomachiningmarksorothersurfaceconditionsmayproducefalseindications.
7.3.Broadareasofparticleaccumulation,whichmightmaskindicationfromdiscontinuities,areprohibited,andsuchareasshallbecleanedandreexamined.
7.4EvaluationofIndications
7.4.1Indicationswillberevealedbyretentionofmagneticparticles,allsuchindicationsarenotnecessarilyimperfectionshowever,sinceexcessivesurfaceroughness,magneticpermeabilityvariations(suchasattheedgeofheataffectedzoned),etc.mayproducesimilarindications.
Note:
Whenexaminecornerweldedjointssuchasnozzletoshelljoint,adequateshoesshallbeusedtofittheshapebeingexamined.TheyokefixedwithshoesshallverifytheliftingpowerrequiredinPara.6.6.

7.4.2AcceptanceStandards
TheseacceptancestandardsshallapplyunlessothermorerestrictivestandardsarespecifiedforspecificmaterialsorapplicationswithinthisDivision.
Allsurfacestobeexaminedshallbefreeof:
(a)Relevantlinearindications.
(b)Relevantroundedindicationsgreaterthan3/16in.
(c)Fourormorerelevantroundedindicationsinalineseparatedby1/16in.orless,edgetoedge.
(d)Anindicationofanimperfectionmaybelargerthantheimperfectionthatcausesit.However,thesizeoftheindicationisthebasisforacceptanceevaluation.
Whenresidualmagneticforthinterferethesubsequentprocessingorusage,andequippedinthedrawings,specificationorpurchaseorder,thepartorareashallbedemagnetized.
