Snakesandscorpions.Um,just’causeIknowthatusuallyonebitecouldmeanthat’stheend.

Idon’tlikespiders.It’snotreallyananimal–butIhatespiders.

Iamveryscaredofspiders.Um,andeventhoughinAustralia,wegetsomeverysmallbutverydangerousspiders–I’mafraidofverybigspiders.

Idon’tparticularlylikehorsesbecausethey’rebig,andtheyfrightenourdog.

I’mnotreallyfrightenedofanyanimals.Ilovethemall.

There’snothingthatscaresme–thatIhaven’tgotanymemoriesofanimalsscaringmeasachild.

I’mquitescaredofsharks.Idon’treallyliketheseaandsowhalesandum,animalssuchasthat,Idon’treallylike.Um,Isupposebecauseit’stheunknown,Ijustfinditquitescary.

Peoplearelivinglongerandhealthierlivesthaneverbefore,butabigpopulationmeansbigproblemsfortheplanet.

Let’slookatthreeofthemostimportantproblems.Thefirstproblemiswater.Manypeopleintheworldcan’tgetenoughwater.Butinsomecountriesweusetoomuch.ApersoninGambia,Africa,forexample,usesmuchlesswaterthansomeoneintheUnitedStates.InGambia,onepersonusesfourandahalflitersofwateraday.ButintheUSit’s600liters.Andtomaketheproblemworse,thedesertsaregettingbigger.TheSaharaDesertisoneofthehottestplacesintheworld,andisalreadythelargestdesert.Buteachyearitgetsbiggerthanbefore,soitgetsmoredifficulttofindcleanwater.Oursecondproblemistheanimals.Therearemorepeopleontheearththaneverbefore.Thismeansweusemorespace.Andfortheanimalsthismeansthatthereislessspacethanbefore.OneexampleistheAmazonRainforest.Ithasthehighestnumberofplantandanimalspeciesintheworld,butit’sgettingsmallereveryyear.Peoplearedestroyingtherainforesttomakemorespaceforhouses,roadsandfarms.Inthelast10yearswehavedestroyedmorethan150,000squarekilometersofforest–that’sanarealargerthanGreece!

Sointhefuture,manyplantsandanimalspecieswillbecomeextinct.Andthelastproblemonourlist,butnottheleastimportant,istheweather.Theworldisgettingwarmer.TheiceinGreenlandismeltingfasterthaneverbefore.Alsosealevelsarerising.Thismeansthatsoonsomeoftheworld’smostimportantcities,likeNewYork,London,Bangkok,SydneyandRiodeJaneiromightallbeunderwater.
