Introduction
ModernTimesisanAmericansilentfilmshotin1936.Itwasscripted,directed,andstaredbyawell-knownAmericancomediannamedCharlieChaplin.Strictlyspeaking,itisnotapurelysilentfilm,forwithinsomesequences,afewdialogues,soundtrackmusic,evenaveryfewsoundeffectscanbefound.Accordingly,thisisaquasi-silentfilm.Theapplicationofsoundeffectsinthemovieisquitelimited,however,theyaremarvelouslyadopted.Thepaperfocusesontheanalysisofthesoundeffectsmanipulatedinsomefootages,inahopetohelptheaudienceunderstandwhatthedirectorintentstoconveyandbetterappreciatethefabulouspicture.
DefinitionandFunctionofSoundEffects
OxfordDictionary（1999,p793）definessoundeffectsas：
“asoundotherthanspeechormusicmadeartificiallyforuseinaplay,film,etc.”。
Webster’sEncyclopedicUnabridgedDictionaryoftheEnglishLanguage（1996,p1359）givesthedefinitionas“anysound,otherthanmusicorspeech,artificiallyreproducedtocreateaneffectinadramaticpresentation,asthesoundofastorm,acreakingdoor,etc”.TheNewOxfordDictionaryofEnglish（Pearsall,2001）impartsitssenseas:
“asoundratherthanspeechormusicartificialforuseinaplay,film,orotherbroadcastproduction.”
Asforthefunctionofsoundeffectsintheaforesaidartforms,SunLei（SunLei,2008）explainsitcanpowerfullyimpacttheaudience’audioperception，enhancethespecialeffectrelatingtotheplotinafilm,i.e.itcanhelpstresstheverisimilitudeofthevision，exaggerateandfoilsurroundingatmosphere,breakframes，extendtheview，broadenthefieldofvision，connecttimeandspace，putframesinseriesconnection，strengthenmotionfeelingforstaticpictures（pp191-193）。
LuShaoyang（陆绍阳,2009）deemssoundeffectscanbedividedintonaturalandartificialones，whichfunctionstobuildupatmosphere，intensifyuniqueatmosphere（p160）.ShaoQinfeng（邵清风,2007）insiststheycanemphasizeatmosphere，portraytheenvironmentwhererolesstay,expresscharacters’feelingsandemotion，setupspecialstate（pp95-96）.
Basedontheaforementioneddefinitionsandthedescriptionfromthoseauthoritativedictionariesandscholars,wecansummarizesoundeffectsasmeansexcludingdialoguesandsoundtrackmusic,eitherfromnatureormadeartificiallyandappliedinfilms,drama,TVseriesshowsandfunctiontomatchuptheviewsinframestolooklikeastrueaspossible,andcreatespecifiedatmospheretohavetheaudienceimaginerelatedvision.
