MarieCurieisprobablythemostfamouswomanscientistwhohaseverlived・BornMariaSklodowskainPolandin1867,sheisfamousforherworkonradioactivity,andwastwiceawinneroftheNobelPrize・Withherhusband,PierreCurie,andHenriBecquerel,shewasawardedthe1903NobelPrizeforPhysics,andwasthensolewinnerofthe1911NobelPrizeforChemistry.ShewasthefirstwomantowinaNobelPrize・
Fromchildhood,Mariewasremarkableforherprodigiousmemory,andattheageof16wonagoldmedaloncompletionofhersecondaryeducation.Becauseherfatherlosthissavingsthroughbadinvestment,shethenhadtotakeworkasateacher.FormherearningsshewasabletofinancehersisterBronia*smedicalstudiesinParis,ontheunderstandingthatBroniawould,inturn,laterhelphertogetaneducation.
In1891thispromisewasfulfilledandMariewenttoParisandbegantostudyattheSorbonne(theUniversityofParis)・Sheoftenworkedfarintothenightandlivedonlittiemorethanbreadandbutterandtea.Shecamefirstintheexaminationinthephysicalsciencesin1893,andin1894wasplacedsecondintheexaminationinmathematicalsciences・ItwasnotuntilthespringofthatyearthatshewasintroducedtoPierreCurie・

soutstandingachievementswastohaveunderstoodtheneedtoaccumulateintenseradioactivesources,notonlytotreatillnessbutalsotomaintainanabundantsupplyforresearch・TheexistenceinParisattheRadiumInstituteofastockofgramsofradiummadeadecisivecontributiontothesuccessoftheexperimentsundertakenintheyearsaround1930.ThisworkpreparedthewayforthediscoveryoftheneutronbySirJamesChadwickand,aboveall,forthediscoveryin1934byIreneandFredericJoliot-Curieofartificialradioactivity・Afewmonthsafterthisdiscovery,MarieCuriediedasaresultofleukaemiacausedbyexposuretoradiation・Shehadoftencarriedtesttubescontainingradioactiveisotopesinherpocket,remarkingontheprettyblue-greenlighttheygaveoff.
