Researchersshowcommonalitiesinhowdifferentglassymaterialsfail

Glassismysterious.Itisabroadclassofmaterialsthatextendswellbeyondtheeverydaywindowpane,butonethingthatthesedisparateglassesseemtohaveincommonisthattheyhavenothingincommonwhenitcomestotheirinternalstructures,especiallyincontrastwithhighlyorderedandpatternedcrystals.Glassysystemscanalsorangeinscale:
fromthingslikemetallicglasses,composedofatoms,tosandcastles,composedofgrainsofsand.
ResearchersattheUniversityofPennsylvaniahavenowshownanimportantcommonalitythatseemstoextendthroughtherangeofglassymaterials.Theyhavedemonstratedthatthescalingbetweenaglassymaterial’sstiffnessandstrengthremainsunchanged,implyingaconstantcriticalstrainthatthesematerialscanwithstandbeforecatastrophicfailure,despitetheextremevariationfoundamongthisclassofmaterial’sphysicalproperties.
Thisconstantcriticalstrainprovidesinsightintothefundamental“seed”outofwhichfailureinglassesgrow:
asmallgroupoftheglass’sconstituentparticlesoratomsthatchangeshapeinacollectiveway.Despitethedisorderthatepitomizesglass,thiscoordinatedactivityappearstobeuniversalamongmanyglassysystems,suchascertainmetals,polymersandcolloids,andisanimportantstartingpointfordesigningmoredurablematerials.
ThestudywasconductedbygraduatestudentDanielStricklandandassistantprofessorDanielGianolaoftheDepartmentofMaterialsScienceandEngineeringinPenn’sSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedScience,alongwiththengraduatestudentYun-RuHuangandassociateprofessorDaeyeonLeeofEngineering’sDepartmentofChemicalandBiomolecularEngineering.
ItwaspublishedintheProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences.
Glassesareamorphous,meaningthattheirconstituentparticles,whethertheyareatoms,colloidsorgrains,arearrangedinawaythathasnooverarchingpattern.Thelackofinternalconsistencymakestheirbehaviortrickytopredict,especiallywhenitcomestohowtheybreakorfallapart.Crystallinematerials,whichhaveatomsneatlylinedupinrepeatingpatterns,tendtofailstartingatdefects,orplaceswherethepatternisdisrupted.
Theperiodicityofthesepatternsalsoallowsresearcherstovisualizetheatomicstructureofcrystallinematerials.Nosuchabilityisavailablefortheirglassycounterparts.
“Therearelotsofwaystomapoutthepositionofatomsanddefectsinacrystal,”Gianolasaid,“butwehavenowayofdoingthatforglasses.That’swhyweneedtobuildlargerscalemodelsifwe’regoingtounderstandhowtheiratomicstructureinfluencestheirbehavior.”
Themodeltheresearchersusedintheirstudy,developedbyDaeyeonLee’slab,weretinypillarsmadeoutofmicroscopicplasticbeads.Likewetsand,thesebeadswereabletoholdashapeduetocapillarybridges,whichactedasastand-inforatomicbonds.
“Wemeasurethestressatwhichthepillarsdeformpermanently,”Stricklandsaid,“andwefoundasurprisinglysimilarrelationshipbetweenthewaytheybehaveandthewayatomicdisorderedsolidsbehave.Inaddition,themorphologyofthefailedpillarsshowedstrikingresemblancetoatomicdisorderedsolids.”
Amongtheseresemblancesareshearbands,thinregionsofparticlesthatslidebytheirneighborsinthebulkofthematerialinresponsetostress.Thoughtheydonotoccurinbrittle,oxideglasseslikethekindusedinwindowpanes,thisphenomenonisseeninavarietyofglassymaterials,fromatomicscalesinmetallicglassesallthewayuptogeologicalscalesinearthquakes.Despiteitsubiquity,however,themechanismbehindshearbanding,aswellasthecriticalvalueofstrainneededtodrivethephenomenon,isstillpoorlyunderstood.
“Wewanttobetterunderstandthiskindoffailurebecausewewanttomitigateitifpossible,”Gianolasaid.“Ifyou’reengineeringagoodmaterial,youdon’twantthatkindoffailuretohappen.It’scatastrophicandlocalized,whenwe’dratheritbegracefulanduniform.You’dratherhaveadentinyourcarbumper,ratherthanhavingthewholethingshearoff.“
Theresearcherscompressedtheirmicropillarswithaminiaturepiston,measuringtheforcetransmittedthroughthemwhilewatchingthemundermagnification.
Byrunningthistestwithpillarstampeddownintodifferentdensities,theresearchersfoundthatthefailurepointsofmaterialswithdifferentstiffnessesfallonaneatlinethatrunsthroughglassesatavarietyoflengthscales.
“Atsomelevelofappliedstress,”Stricklandsaid,“thisfundamentaleventthatleadstoshear-bandingbecomesveryfavorable.We’veshownthatthispointisroughlythesameinatomicsystems,polymerglasses,andinourmicropillars.”
Thefindingssuggestthatthesemodelsystemsareaneffectivetoolforstudyingthe“buildingblocks”offailureinglassysystems.
“Theslopeofthatlinetellsusaboutthefundamentalunitofdeformationintheseglasses,”Gianolasaid.“Itlookslikeitisassociatedwithshapechangeinsomethinglike10to100particles,butultimatelyleadstoasystem-spanningevent,anditseemstobeuniversalforallofthesematerials.”
“Thisisparticularlysurprisingandinterestingbecauseitimpliesthatplasticdeformationisbuiltoncooperativemotionoftheparticles,inthecaseofourpillars,andatomsinatomicglasses,”hesaid.“So,despitetheatomicrandomness,thereissomelevelofcommunicationbeyondsingleparticlesinaglass.Thisisincontrasttocrystals,whereanycooperativemotionistrumpedbyindividualdefects.”
Buildingupthisbig-pictureviewofsuchadisparategroupofmaterialsepitomizestheinterdisciplinarynatureofmaterialsresearchatPenn.Lee’sgroupworkswithcolloidsandsoftmatter,whereastheGianolalabspecializesinmoreinatomicsolidsandhardmaterials.Combiningtheirperspectivesallowedfornewinsightsthatspanawiderangeofsystems.
“Ourresearchareasdonotnecessarilyoverlaponafirstlook,”Leesaid,“butwewereabletocomeupwithauniqueprojectthroughthesupportofPenn’sMaterialsResearchScienceandEngineeringCenter,whichbringstogethergroupswithverydifferentexpertise.Thisprojectisaniceculminationoftwoseeminglydisparatefieldsofresearch.”
Ongoingworkbytheresearchersentailsusinginsitu3Dconfocalmicroscopytotrackindividualparticlesthroughthedeformationprocess.

一个微柱剪切带形成后破碎的显微图像。
玻璃是神秘的。

研究人员在研究中使用的由DaeyeonLee的实验室开发的模型,是由微小塑料珠做出来的微小的支柱。

这些相似之处是剪切带,这是在应激反应时大部分材料中由相邻颗粒华东产生的区域。
虽然他们没有出现在窗户上使用的那类脆化、氧化玻璃上出现,但这种现象常见于各种玻璃材料,从在金属玻璃中出现的原子尺度的剪切带到地震中出现的地质尺度剪切带等。
尽管分布广泛,但是,对于剪切带背后的机制,以及驱动该现象需要的应变临界值,我们仍然知之甚少。
“我们希望更好地理解这种破碎,因为我们希望如果可能的话,能够缓解其程度,”Gianola说。
“如果你正在设计一种好材料,你不会希望发生这种破裂的情况。
这是灾难性的,局部性的,我们希望它能良好而均匀。
我们宁愿汽车保险杠有一个凹痕,而不是希望整个保险杠都折断。
研究人员通过微型活塞压缩了微型柱,然后在显微镜下观察他们,并测量他们传递的力。
通过运行这个测试与支柱夯实分解成不同的密度,研究人员发现,材料不同刚度的故障点落在一个整齐一致,以不同的长度穿过玻璃。
“当施加的压力达到一定程度时,”斯特里克兰说,“会导致剪切带变得非常有利。
我们已经表明,这点在原子系统、聚合物玻璃以及我们的微型柱中大致都是如此。
