InNovember1921,whilenursingacold,Flemingdiscoveredlysozyme.ThismarkedFleming’sfirstgreatdiscovery.InSeptember1928,Flemingreturnedtohislabafteramonthawaywithhisfamily,andwassurprisedtonoticethatatypeofbacteriahehadleftouthadbecomepollutedbyamold(霉菌).Thebacteriasurroundingthismoldhadbeendestroyed.Herealizedthathediscoveredtheworld’sfirstbacteriakiller.Itwaslaternamed“penicillin(青霉素)”.

Butwhenwestartthinkingoflanguagemoreintermsofstylethanvocabularyorspelling,adifferentpictureappears.Americansentenceswereonaverageonewordshorterin2006thantheywerein1931.Americansalsousealotmoreapostrophes(撇号)intheirwritingthantheyusedto,so“thehandoftheking”becomes“theking’shand”.Anothertrendistoavoidstructuressuchas“apaperwaswritten”;
instead,peopleusethemoreactiveform,“Iwroteapaper”.
IfanythingmarksouttheBritish,it’stheirspecialwayofusingadverbs(副词),especiallyasaformofpolitecalmness—so“theworstdayever”is“thingsperhapsaren’tquiteaswonderfulastheycouldbe”.Asanexpertoncesaid,“TheEnglishhaveasurprisingabilityforflyingintoagreatcalm.”Americanstendtocommunicateinamorestraightforwardmanner,tellingit“asitis”.
