Inadditiontothemythofracialsuperiority,thereisasecondmyth—thatoftheexistenceofa“pure”race.Fromtheperspectiveofcontemporarybiology,humansshowsuchamixtureofphysicalcharacteristics,thatthe“pure”racesdonotexist.Insteadoffallingintodistincttypesclearlyseparatefromoneanother,humancharacteristicsflowendlesslytogether.Theseminutegradationsmadearbitraryanyattempttodrawdefinitelines.

Largegroupingsofpeople,however,canbeclassifiedbybloodtypeandgenefrequencies.Yeteventhisarrangementdoesnotuncover“race”.Rather,suchclassificationsaresoarbitrarythatbiologistsandanthropologistscandrawuplistingsshowinganynumberof“race”.AshleyMontagu,aphysicalanthropologist,pointedoutthatsomescientistshaveclassifiedhumansintoonlytwo“races”whileothershavefoundasmanyastwothousand.Montaguhimselfclassifiedhumansintoforty“racial”groups.
