In2013,aMexicocompany,InosanBiopharmawasmarketinganewantivenom,Inoserp,whichhasanextremelylowrateofseveresideeffectsandalsoisadvantageousinthatit’sfreeze-dried.ButruralAfricanswhoseearningsarenomorethanafewdollarsadaycouldn’taffordit.

“Governmentsshouldofferfinancialsupport,”saysChippaux,atropicaldiseasesexpert.“Theyshouldmakeantivenomcheapersothatpeoplecanbetreated.”
