sWutheringHeights.Theyoungestsister,Anne,wasalsoagiftednovelist,andherbookshavethesameextraordinaryqualityashersisters'

TheirfatherwasPatrickBronte,borninIreland.Hemovedwithhiswife,MariaBronte,andtheirsixsmallchildrentoHaworthinYorkshirein1820.Soonafter,Mrs.Bronteandthetwoeldestchildrendied,leavingthefathertocarefortheremainingthreegirlsandaboy.

Charlottewasbornin1816.Emilywasbornin1818andAnnein1820.TheirbrotherBranwellwasbornin1817.Lefttothemselves,thechildrenwroteandtoldstoriesandwalkedoverthehills.Theygrewuplargelyselfeducated.Branwellshowedagreatinterestindrawing.Thegirlsweredeterminedtoearnmoneyforhisarteducation.Theytookpositionsasteachersortaughtchildrenintheirhomes.

Aschildrentheyhadallwrittenmanystories.Charlotte,asayounggirl,alonewrote22books,eachwith60to100pagesofsmallhandwriting.Therefore,theyturnedtowritingforincome.By1847,CharlottehadwrittenTheProfessor;

Emily,WutheringHeights;

andAnne,AgnesGrey.AftermuchdifficultyAnneandEmilyfoundapublisher,buttherewasnointerestshowninCharlotte'

sbook.(Itwasnotpublisheduntil1859.)However,onepublisherexpressedaninterestinseeingmoreofherwork.JaneEyrewasalreadystarted,andshehurriedlyfinishedit.Itwasacceptedatonce;

thuseachofthesistershadabookpublishedin1847.

JaneEyrewasimmediatelysuccessful;

theothertwo,however,didnotdosowell.PeopledidnotlikeWutheringHeights.Theysaiditwastoowild,tooanimallike.ButgraduallyitcametobeconsideredoneofthefinestnovelsintheEnglishlanguage.EmilylivedonlyashortwhileafterthepublicationofthebookandAnnediedin1849.

CharlottepublishedShirleyin1849,andVillettein1853.In1854shemarriedArthurBellNicholls.Butonlyayearlater,shediedoftuberculosis(肺结核)ashersistershad.
