In1953,atSt.Mary’sHospitalinLondon,Franklandpopularizedthepollencount,whichisnowusedworldwidetohelpdoctorsandpatientsunderstandwhatcausedtheallergy.Herantestsonhimselftomakehisdiscoveries.“Icausedsevereallergicreactionsinmyselftoaninsect,”heexplained.“IwasdeterminedtofindouthowIreactedtomosquitoes,fleasorwhateverinsectbitingme.”

Geipelandcolleaguesexaminedtheeffectofrainnoiseonbats’decision-making.Theystudiedtwodifferentspeciesofbats:

thecommonbig-earedbat,whichcatchesinsectsfromleavesandothersurfacesinthelowerlayerofplants,andthePallas’smastiffbatthathuntsinsectsonthewingastheyflythroughopenspaces.

“Wewonderedwhetherbatsarestayinglongerinthesafetyoftheirnestsduringrainstormsandwhethernoisewouldinformthemabouttherainfalloutside,”Geipelsaid.Totesttheirideas,Geipelandherteamputaspeakernearentrancesofbatnestsandplayedrecordingsofheavydownpours.

Meanwhile,theyrecordedthevideoofthebats’responses.Theyalsoplayedrecordingsofnormalforestsounds.Asaresult,bothspeciesdelayedtheirflyingoutoftheirnestswhentheyheardthesoundofrain.
