Stereotypesaresimplyoverstatedassumptionsaboutgroupsofpeople.ImagineifatouristvisitedasmalltowninSwitzerlandandsawanumberoflocalsplayingthealphorninstrument,andthenclaimedthatSwisspeoplecanplaythealphorn.Thiswouldbeastereotype!

ThisisanoverstatedimageoftheSwisswhichisbasedononetourist’sexperience.

If,however,thistouristweretosaythattheSwissareverypunctual,thiscouldbeseenasaculturalcharacteristic.ThisisbecauseitisapatternofbehaviourwhichisverytypicalinSwitzerland:

fromtheirtransportsystemtotheirbusinessmeetings.

Inthisway,somepeoplearguethatgeneralisinganothercultureisnotjustuseful,butimportant.Politiciansalwayshavetobemindfuloftheculturalcharacteristicsofdifferentcountries.Bybecomingawareofdifferentculturalcharacteristics,theycanavoidcausingoffenceinthosecultures.
