asachild,Istudiedinaspecializedmusicalschool.Myteacherswerecelebratedartists,andtheyplannedtomoldmeintoaprominentmusician.Attheageoftwelve,Iwontheaforementionedcompetition,whichgrantedmetherighttobeastudentinaneminentconservatory.Thementalenergyrequiredtosucceedinsuchanendeavorisgreat,especiallyamongchildren.Strongself-disciplineandcontrolarecrucial.Asayouth,Iperformedoncountlessstagesthroughoutthecountry;

thisexperienceenabledmetobuildastrongsteadinessandconcentration,eveninextremesituations.Throughthepsychologicaldrainsofperformance,Idevelopedinternalresourcesthathaveservedmeineveryaspectofmylife.Asecondareaofpersonalsatisfactioniscommunityserviceandtheimpactithashadonmylife.Noonecanbetrulysuccessfulunlessheiswillingtoworkforthebettermentofothers.AnotableinstanceofmyinvolvementisthetimeIspentinArmenianhospitalsduringthecountry&

stimeofneed.InDecemberof1988,adevastatingearthquakestruckArmenia,killing25,000peopleandinjuringmorethan30,000.Atthetime,Iwasafirst-yearphysicsstudentatYerevanStateUniversityinArmenia.Theearthquakepainedmedeeply,andIinstantlyvolunteeredmyservicestooneofthelocalhospitals.Myworkatthehospitallastedforovertwomonths,andwasoneofthemostrewardingtimesofmylife.Ifeltgreatpleasureattherecoveryofeachpatientinthehospital.Theexperiencechangedmyperspectiveincountlessways,anddevelopedwithinmeadeepappreciationformedicine.Forthenextthreeyears,ItookeveningclassesatanursingschoolinadditiontomycoursesatYerevanStateUniversity.Despitethedifficultyofbalancingsuchaheavyworkload,Igainedanimmeasurableasset:

theabilitytobeofrealhelptoothersinemergencysituations.

（Pleaselimittothree.）Withnomoney,nodirection,andnogoals,Igraduatedfromhighschoolin1987notknowingifIwouldeverbeaman,ifIwouldeverknowwhatlifemeans.Unabletoaffordcollegetuition,IworkedoddjobsforafewmonthsbeforedecidingtojointheUnitedStatesMarineCorps.Ascrappykidwhoneededstructureandsupport,IenteredtheMarinesunpreparedforthenextthirteenweeksofextraordinaryphysicalandmentalchallenges.Arrivingattherecruit-trainingdepotinParrisIslandSouthCarolinaonFebruary3,1988notknowingwhattoexpect,Iwatchedmyhairfalloffmyhead,hadvaccinationsforeverydiseaseeverdiscovered,andlearnedtolivewithsixtyotheryoungmeninclosequarters.Thedayswerelong.Iwouldwakeupat4a.m.andworknonstopfor18hoursuntilIcouldcollapseonmybed.Exposedtoindividualsfrommanydifferentculturalandeconomicbackgrounds,Ilearnedthevalueofteamworkandtheworkethicessentialtoleadership.Whenwefirstarrivedontheisland,myplatoonwasajumbledmessofdisobedient,outofshape,undisciplinedboys.Afterthreemonthsofexhaustingtrainingweweremoldedintoagroupofhighlymotivated,physicallyfitmen.Ontheproudestdayofmylife,ImarchedinthegraduationparadetobecomeaUnitedStatesMarine.AfterbeingdischargedfromtheUnitedStatesMarineCorps,IbecamedeterminedtoattainanelectricalengineeringdegreefromFloridaStateUniversity.IwiselyinvestedintheGIBillearlyoninmyMarineCorpscareerinordertogotocollege.Althoughasubstantialamountofmoney,theGIBillonlycoveredmytuition;

topayforfoodandrent,ItookafulltimejobwiththeVAwork-studyprogram.InthebeginningIhaddifficultyadjustingtoworkingfulltimewhilemaintainingafullcoarseload,andIbegantofeelhinderedbymyyearsoutsidetheclassroom.However,determinedtosucceed,Ilearnedtomanagemytimewell,andIestablishedgoodstudyhabits,whichhavecontinuedtothepresent.Inthespringof1997IobtainedaBachelorsdegreeinElectricalengineering,afullyearaheadofschedule.ItakeprideinthefactthatIamthefirstpersoninmyfamilytoobtainacollegedegree.ImovedtoLosAngelesaftergraduatingfromcollegeandacceptedapositionatanaerospacecompanyasadesignengineer.AlthoughIhadmultipleoffers,Ichosetoworkatmyparticularcompanytofurthermyeducation.PuttinginlonghoursatworkwhiledevotingmostofmypersonaltimetoobtainingaMastersdegreeinelectricalengineering,IfeltlikeIwasincollegeagainwithmyfulltimejobandacademicresponsibilities.Tokeepsomesenseofsanityandmaintaingoodspirits,Idecidedtolearnhowtosnowboard.Althoughatfirstsnowboardingseemedamostimpossiblemissiongiventhelongdrivetotheresortandmyinexperiencewithcoldweather,Iperseveredandbytheendofmyfirstdaycouldnavigatemywaydownthemountain.Ihavesincebecomeanaccomplishedsnowboarder,butnothingmatchestheexhilarationIfeltattheendofthatfirstdaywhenIcompletedmyfirstrunwithoutfalling.WhyhaveyoudecidedtoentertheFullyEmployedMBAprogram?

Withthedrive,determination,anddisciplinetobothworkatmycareerandattendanMBAprogram,IamexcitedtopursueahighqualityMBAatUCLA.Interestedinacquiringtheskillsetandtechnicalknowledgenecessarytobecomeahi-techconsultant,theUCLAprogramwillprovecentraltomyfuturesuccess.Asanengineeringmajorincollege,Idevelopedexcellentanalyticalskillsandimprovedmyproblem-solvingability,butIneverhadtheopportunitytotakecoursesexploringbusinessstrategy,finance,ormarketforces.Torealizemycareergoal,Iclearlymustenhancemyabilitiesintheseaswellasotherareasofbusiness.IbelievethatthemanagementcoreatAndersonwillprovidemewiththenecessaryknowledgetoenhanceanddevelopmycapabilities.Also,inordertobecomeasuccessfulconsultant,itisimperativethatIgainamorethorougheducationinforeignmarkets,businesstechnology,andcompetition.Asahi-techconsultantinthetwenty-firstcentury,theabilitytounderstandbusinessonaglobalscalewillbehighlyprized.TheInternationalFieldStudyatAndersonwouldsuitmyneedswellbyallowingstudentstolearnaboutbusinessbyworkingwithforeigncompanies.Moreover,Ilookforwardtointeractingwiththehighlyqualified,diversestudentsoftheAndersonFEMBAprogram.Withonly132studentsformingnumerousstudygroups,theprogramensurestheintimacynecessarytolearnfromeachother’svaryingperspectivesandbackgrounds.IknowIcouldbothcontributeandgrowinthisuniqueenvironmentwhereallstudentsarefullyemployed.
