TheStarCountwaspartofaglobalefforttohelpscientistslearnmoreabouthowlightpollutionaffectsourviewofthenightsky.Whetherparticipantssawthousandsofstars—orjustadozen—dependedalotonwhethertheyweresurroundedbydarknessorbytwinklingcitylights.

Onaclearnight,withnoclouds,moonlight,orartificiallightstoblocktheview,peoplecanseemorethan14,000starsinthesky,butwhenpeoplearesurroundedbycitylightsthey’reluckytosee150stars.

Ifyou’veeverdriventowardabigcityatnightandseenitsglowfromafar,you’vewitnessedlightpollution.Itoccurswhenlightfromstreetlights,officebuildings,signs,andothersourcesstreamsintospaceandilluminatesthenightsky.Thislightmakesmanystarsinvisibletopeopleonearth.

Dustandparticlesofpollutionfromfactoriesandindustriesworsentheeffectsoflightpollution.Whentheseparticlesfloatintotheatmosphere,lightricochets（跳飞）offofthemandscattersevenmore.
