Competenceisdefinedastheidealuser’sknowledgeoftherulesofhislanguageandperformanceisdefinedastheactualrealizationofthisknowledgeinlinguisticcommunication.Aspeakerhasinternalizedasetofrulesabouthislanguage,whichenableshimtoproduceandunderstandaninfinitelylargenumberofsentencesandrecognizesentencesthatareungrammaticalandambiguous.Despitehisperfectknowledgeofhisownlanguage,aspeakercanstillmakemistakesinactualuse.Thisimperfectperformanceiscausedbysocialandpsychologicalfactors.

Thearbitrarynatureoflanguageisasignofsophisticationanditmakesitpossibleforlanguagetohaveanunlimitedsourceofexpressions.

Languageisproductiveorcreativeinthatitmakespossibletheconstructionandinterpretationofnewsignalsbyitsusers.

Languageisasystem,whichconsistsoftwosetsofstructures,ortwolevels.Thedualityofstructureordoublearticulationoflanguageenablesitsuserstotalkaboutanythingwithintheirknowledge.

Languagecanbeusedtorefertothingswhicharepresentornotpresent,realorimaginedmattersinthepast,present,orfuture,orinfarawayplaces.

Languagecanbeusedtorefertocontextsremovedfromtheimmediatesituationsofthespeaker.Thisiswhat“displacement”means.
