TheCopandtheAnthemwrittenbyO.Henry,similartootherO.Henry’sothershortstories,isironicandhumorous,diggingdeeptorevealthedarkeraspectofthesociety.Throughoutthestory,O.Henryemploysoverwroughtironyandothervariousliterarydevicestoenhancehisthemethatundertheso-calledcapitalistdemocracythatSoapyattemptedtoseekforhisspecialpurposefromprison.;
hedidsomanyevilthingsyetnopolicemansenthimtoprison;
justwhenhewasmovedbyananthemanddeterminedtostartanewlifehewascapturedbyapolicemanandtriedforthreemonthscaptivityinprison.WiththepurposeofanalysisonhowO.Henryusesstylistictechniquestoengrossreadersinthisincrediblestory,thisthesiswillfirstlypresentanoverviewofstylisticsandintroducesomeinfluentialpreviousresearchesonO.HenryandhisworkThecopandtheAnthem.Furthermore,itwillcarryoutacomprehensivestylisticanalysisofthisstoryinlexical,syntactic,semanticandcontextualaspects.Duringthecourseofanalyzingthestoryweareprovidingtheunderstandforreadingandraisinglanguageawarenessandenhancinglinguisticandstylisticandliterarycompetence.

1.BriefAccountoftheAuthor
WilliamSidneyPorter,thismasterofshortstoriesismuchbetterknownunderhispenname“O.Henry”.HewasborninGreensboro,NorthCarolinaonSeptember11,1862,wherehespenthischildhood.hisonlyformereducationwasreceivedattheschoolofhisauntLina.Heworkedasapprentice,pharmacist,cowboy,clerk,bookkeepersincefifteenyearsold.By1887,PorterbeganworkingasadraftsmanintheGeneralLandOffice,in1891,hebecameatellerwiththeFirstNationBankinAustin.thenstartingin1895hewroteacolumnfortheHoustonDailyPost.Meanwhile,Porterwasaccusedofembezzlingfundsfrombank,hefledtoHonduras.Onhearinghiswife’sillness,hecameback,butwasfoundguiltyofthebankingchargesandsentencedtoinanOhioprison.Thetoughlifeexperiencelaidadeepfoundationofhiswritingcareer.Heemergedfromprisonas“O.Henry”tohelpshieldhistrueidentity.Afterreleasedin1901,hemovedtoNewYork,whollydevotedhimselftoliterature.O.HenrywrotewithrealisticdetailbasedonhisfirsthandexperiencesbothinTexasandinNewYorkcity.hepublishedtencollectionsofstoriesandover600shortstoriesduringhislifetime.O.Henryiscommonlyassociatedwiththeshortstoryandthemasterfulironicplot.

Soapy,theheroofthestory,mightsetouttofindalodgingsforwinter.Inhismind,theidealplaceisprison.SoSoapydidvariousbadthingsinordertoentertheprison:

forafreemealbuthefailed;
heeverdashedastoneintoaglassbutthepolicemanrefusedtoacceptSoapyasaclue;
thenSoapysuccessfullyhadabigmealinarestaurantyethewasjustbeateninsteadofbeingsenttoprison;
heeverluredawomaninordertobecapturedbythepolicemanbutthewomanwasaprostituteandhefailedtobecapturedbythepolicemanagain;
thenSoapybegantoyelldrunkgibberish,however,thepolicemandisregardedhimasaYalestudentandpardonedhim;
inacigarstorehetookaman’sumbrellainpublicyetthatmanwasnotthetrueownerofit,too,thusSoapyfailedagain.Andatthistime,heheardtheanthemfromachurchandhewasgreatlymovedbytheanthemanddeterminedtostartanewlift.Butjustatthistime,apolicemancapturedhimforbeingidleness.Hewastriedforthreemonthsinprison.
3.MajorThemeofthe“TheCopandanthem”
O.Henryiscommonlyassociatedwiththeshortstoryandthemasterfulironicplot.ThethemeofthestoryisrelatedtothecopandthemaincharacterSoapywhoishomelessandtryingtogetthrowninjailforthewintersohewillhaveawarmplacetostayandfoodtoeat.The“island”,standingforjail,symbolizesarefuge,aplacedistancefromcrowdsandnoisycivilization.andaplacewhereSoapycanbecomfortable.Thethesiscontainsthestrongsarcasticatmosphere:
theprisonbecomeagoodplacewhilethehellturnedtobeaheaven.Evilconductsweregivenlenienttreatmentwhilethegoodandhonestwerepanelized.
