Diskgroups:
∙Adiskgroupisacollectionofvolumemanagerdisksgroupedtogethertoholdthedata.Alltheconfigurationchanges
madetoadiskgroupareappliedtothedisksinthatdiskgrouponly.
∙VolumeManagerobjectscannotspandiskgroupsi.e.alltheoperationsonaparticulardiskgroupremainsconfinedtothatparticulargroup.
∙Diskgroupsenablehighavailabilityasthesecanbesharedbytwoormorehosts
butcanbeaccessedbyonlyonehostatatime.Intwohostsandasharedstoragesituationone
hostcantakeovertheownershipof
thediskgroupsanddrives
incaseother
hostfails.
VolumeManagerdisks
∙Addingphysical
disks
tothevolumemanagerresultsincreationof
publicandprivateregioninthediskbythevolumemanager.Thepublicregionisthediskspaceavailableforvolumespaceandtheprivateregionstorestheconfigurationinformation.
∙AVolumeManager
disksarecreatedfromthepublicregionofaphysicaldiskthatisunderVolumeManagercontrol.Eachvolumemanagerdiskcorrespondstoonephysicaldisk.

Asubdiskissimilartoapartitionbutwithfollowingdifferences:
∙Themaximumnumberofpartitionstoadiskiseight.
∙Thereisnotheoreticallimittonumberofsubdisksthatcanbeattachedtoasingleplex,butithasbeenlimitedtoadefaultvalueof4096.Ifrequired,thisdefaultcanbechanged,usingthevol_subdisk_numtunableparameter.
Plexes
∙Aplexisastructuredororderedcollectionofsubdisksthatrepresentsonecopyofthedatainavolume.Aplexconsistsofoneormoresubdiskslocatedononeormorephysicaldisks.
∙Aplexisalsocalledamirror.Thetermsplexandmirrorcanbeusedinterchangeably,eventhoughaplexisonlyonecopyofthedata.Theterms"
mirrored"
or"
mirroring"
implytwoormorecopiesofdata.
