Inthis1962speechgivenatRiceUniversityinHouston,Texas,PresidentJohnF.KennedyreaffirmedAmerica'

scommitmenttolandingamanonthemoonbeforetheendofthe1960s.ThePresidentspoke1inphilosophical2termsabouttheneedtosolvethemysteriesofspaceandalsodefendedtheenormousexpenseofthespaceprogram.

 

PresidentPitzer,Mr.Vice3President,Governor,Congressman4Thomas,SenatorWiley,andCongressmanMiller5,Mr.Webb,Mr.Bell,scientists,distinguished6guests,andladiesandgentlemen:

Iappreciateyourpresidenthavingmademeanhonoraryvisitingprofessor,andIwillassureyouthatmyfirstlecturewillbeverybrief.

IamdelightedtobehereandI'

mparticularlydelightedtobehereonthisoccasion.

Wemeetatacollegenoted7forknowledge,inacitynotedforprogress,inastatenotedforstrength,andwestandinneedofallthree,forwemeetinanhourofchangeandchallenge,inadecadeofhopeandfear,inanageofbothknowledgeandignorance.Thegreaterourknowledgeincreases,thegreaterourignoranceunfolds.

Despitethestrikingfactthatmostofthescientiststhattheworldhaseverknownarealiveandworkingtoday,despitethefactthatthisNation'

sownscientificmanpowerisdoublingevery12yearsinarateofgrowthmorethanthreetimesthatofourpopulationasawhole,despitethat,thevaststretchesoftheunknownandtheunansweredandtheunfinishedstillfaroutstrip8ourcollectivecomprehension.

Nomancanfully9grasphowfarandhowfastwehavecome,butcondense,ifyouwill,the50,000yearsofman'

srecordedhistoryinatimespanofbutahalf-century.Statedintheseterms,weknowverylittleaboutthefirst40years,exceptattheendofthemadvancedmanhadlearnedtousetheskinsofanimalstocoverthem.Thenabout10yearsago,underthisstandard,manemergedfromhiscavestoconstructotherkindsofshelter.Onlyfiveyearsagomanlearnedtowriteanduseacartwithwheels.Christianitybeganlessthantwoyearsago.Theprintingpresscamethisyear,andthenlessthantwomonthsago,duringthiswhole50-yearspanofhumanhistory,thesteamengineprovidedanewsourceofpower.Newtonexploredthemeaningofgravity.Lastmonthelectriclightsandtelephonesandautomobiles11andairplanesbecameavailable.Onlylastweekdidwedeveloppenicillin12andtelevisionandnuclearpower,andnowifAmerica'

snewspacecraftsucceedsinreachingVenus,wewillhaveliterally13reachedthestarsbeforemidnighttonight.

Thisisabreathtakingpace,andsuchapacecannothelpbutcreatenewillsasitdispels14old,newignorance,newproblems,newdangers.Surelytheopeningvistas15ofspacepromisehighcostsandhardships,aswellashighreward.

Soitisnotsurprisingthatsomewouldhaveusstaywherewearealittlelongertorest,towait.ButthiscityofHouston,thisstateofTexas,thiscountryoftheUnitedStateswasnotbuiltbythosewhowaitedandrestedandwishedtolookbehindthem.Thiscountrywasconqueredbythosewhomovedforward--andsowillspace.

WilliamBradford,speakingin1630ofthefoundingofthePlymouthBayColony,saidthatallgreatandhonorableactionsareaccompaniedwithgreatdifficulties,andbothmustbeenterprisedandovercomewithanswerablecourage.

Ifthiscapsulehistoryofourprogressteachesusanything,itisthatman,inhisquestforknowledgeandprogress,isdetermined16andcannotbedeterred17.Theexplorationofspacewillgoahead,whetherwejoininitornot,anditisoneofthegreatadventuresofalltime,andnonationwhichexpectstobetheleaderofothernationscanexpecttostaybehindinthisraceforspace.

Thosewhocamebeforeusmadecertainthatthiscountryrodethefirstwavesoftheindustrialrevolution,thefirstwavesofmoderninvention,andthefirstwaveofnuclearpower,andthisgenerationdoesnotintendtofounder18inthebackwashofthecomingageofspace.Wemeantobeapartofit--wemeantoleadit.Fortheeyesoftheworldnowlookintospace,tothemoonandtotheplanetsbeyond,andwehavevowed19thatweshallnotseeitgovernedbyahostileflagofconquest,butbyabanneroffreedomandpeace.Wehavevowedthatweshallnotseespacefilledwithweaponsofmassdestruction,butwithinstrumentsofknowledgeandunderstanding.

Yetthevows21ofthisNationcanonlybefulfilledifweinthisNationarefirst,and,therefore,weintendtobefirst.Inshort,ourleadershipinscienceandindustry,ourhopesforpeaceandsecurity,ourobligationstoourselvesaswellasothers,allrequireustomakethiseffort,tosolvethesemysteries,tosolvethemforthegoodofallmen,andtobecometheworld'

sleadingspace-faringnation.
