AttheendofSeptember,ifCongressdoesn’tact,fundingforourroadsandbridgeswillexpire. 

Thiswouldputastoptohighwayconstruction,bridgerepair,masstransitsystemsandotherimportantprojectsthatkeepourcountrymovingquicklyandsafely. 

Anditwouldaffectthousandsofconstructionworkersandtheirfamilieswhodependonthejobscreatedbytheseprojectstomakeendsmeet.

Usually,renewingthistransportationbillisano-brainer. 

Infact,Congresshasreneweditseventimesoverthelasttwoyears. 

ButthankstopoliticalposturinginWashington,theyhaven’tbeenabletoextenditthistime–andtheclockisrunningout.

Allowingthisbilltoexpirewouldbeadisasterforourinfrastructureandoureconomy. 

Rightaway,over4,000workerswouldbefurloughedwithoutpay. 

Ifit’sdelayedforjust10days,wewilllosenearly$1billioninhighwayfundingthatwecannevergetback. 

Andifwewaitevenlonger,almost1millionworkerscouldbeindangeroflosingtheirjobsoverthenextyear.

Thoseareseriousconsequences,andthepainwillbefeltallacrossthecountry. 

InVirginia,19,000jobsareatrisk. 

InMinnesota,morethan12,000. 

AndinFlorida,over35,000peoplecouldbeoutofworkifCongressdoesn’tact.

Thatmakesnosense–andit’scompletelyavoidable. 

There’snoreasontoputmorejobsatriskinanindustrythathasbeenoneofthehardest-hitinthisrecession.There’snoreasontocutofffundingfortransportationprojectsatatimewhensomanyofourroadsarecongested;

somanyofourbridgesareinneedofrepair;

andsomanybusinessesarefeelingthecostofdelays.

Thisisn’taDemocraticoraRepublicanissue–it’sanAmericanissue. 

That’swhy,lastweek,IwasjoinedattheWhiteHousebyrepresentativesfromtheAFL-CIOandtheChamberofCommerce–twogroupswhodon’talwaysseeeye-to-eye,butwhoagreethatit’scriticallyimportantforoureconomythatCongressactnow. 

That’salsowhy128mayorsfrombothpartieswrotetoCongressaskingthemtocometogetherandpassacleanextension. 

Thesearethelocalleaderswhoareonthegroundeveryday,andwhoknowwhatwouldhappentotheircommunitiesifCongressfailstoact.

SoI’mcallingonCongress,assoonastheycomeback,topassacleanextensionofthetransportationbilltokeepworkersonthejob,keepcriticalprojectsmovingforward,andtogivefolksasenseofsecurity.

There’salotoftalkinWashingtonthesedaysaboutcreatingjobs. 

Butitdoesn’thelpwhenthosesamefolksturnaroundandrisklosinghundredsofthousandsofjobsjustbecauseofpoliticalgamesmanship. 

WeneedtopassthistransportationbillandputpeopletoworkrebuildingAmerica. 

Weneedtoputourdifferencesasideanddotherightthingforoureconomy.

WASHINGTON—Inthisweek’saddress,PresidentObamacalledontheAmericanpeopletocometogetherinthespiritofserviceandremembranceasweapproachthetenthanniversaryoftheSeptember11thattacks. 

AllAmericanscanpaytributetothosewholosttheirlivesduring9/11byvisitingServe.Govtofindwaystohelpwithintheirowncommunities. 

Througheventhesmallestofactions,wecanreclaimthesenseofunitythatfollowedtheattacks,anddemonstratethatoursenseofcommonpurposeisjustasstrongtodayasitwastenyearsago. 

Americanscanonceagaincometogethertomarkthissolemnanniversarywithservice,andmovetowardsabrightfutureasonenation.

Injusttwoweeks,we’llcometogether,asanation,tomarkthe10thanniversaryoftheSeptember11thattacks. 

We’llremembertheinnocentliveswelost. 

We’llstandwiththefamilieswholovedthem. 

We’llhonortheheroicfirstresponderswhorushedtothesceneandsavedsomany. 

Andwe’llpaytributetoourtroopsandmilitaryfamilies,andallthosewhohaveservedoverthepasttenyears,tokeepussafeandstrong.

We’llalsorecallhowtheworstterroristattackinAmericanhistorybroughtoutthebestintheAmericanpeople. 

HowAmericanslineduptogiveblood. 

Howvolunteersdroveacrossthecountrytolendahand. 

Howschoolchildrendonatedtheirsavings. 

Howcommunities,faithgroupsandbusinessescollectedfoodandclothing.

Wewereunited,andtheoutpouringofgenerosityandcompassionremindedusthatintimesofchallenge,weAmericansmoveforwardtogether,asonepeople.

ThisSeptember11th,MichelleandIwilljointhecommemorationsatGroundZero,inShanksville,andatthePentagon. 

Butevenifyoucan’tbeinNewYork,PennsylvaniaorVirginia,everyAmericancanbepartofthisanniversary. 

Onceagain,9/11willbeaNationalDayofServiceandRemembrance.
