EIfalifespanisageneticallydeterminedbiologicalcharacteristic,itislogicallynecessarytoproposetheexistenceofaninternalclock,whichinsomewaymeasuresandcontrolstheageingprocessandwhichfinallydeterminesdeathasthelaststepinafixedprogramme.Likethelifespan,themetabolicratehasfordifferentorganismsafixedmathematicalrelationshiptothebodymass.Incomparisontothelifespanthisrelationshipis'
