Abstract

Metaphorisakindofmixtureofcultureandthought.QianZhongshuusesmanyvividandhumorousmetaphorsinTheFortressBesieged,andthetranslatorsofitsEnglishversionhavetriedtheirbesttokeeptheoriginalfeaturesofthesemetaphors.ThispaperanalyzesthetranslationofmetaphorsintheEnglishversionofTheFortressBesiegedwiththeadaptionandselectiontheoryoftranslationinthedimensionsoflanguage,culture,andcommunication,tryingtofindoutaneffectivewayoftranslationofmetaphorstomakeChineseculturemorewidespread.ThetranslationofmetaphorsinTheFortressBesiegedisaprocessofadaptionandselectionofnotonlytheeco-environmentoftranslation,butalsooflanguage,culture,andcommunication.

摘要

隐喻是文化与思维的混合物。

钱钟书先生在其著作《围城》中运用了大量生动而幽默的隐喻，而其英译本也是尽可能保持了这些隐喻的原汁原味。

本论文运用翻译适应选择论，从语言、文化、交流三个维度分析《围城》英译本中的隐喻翻译。

通过这样的分析，阐明《围城》中的隐喻翻译既是对翻译生态环境的选择适应过程，也是语言、文化、交流维度的选择适应过程，本论文的写作目的是寻求一种有效的隐喻翻译方法使中国文化更广泛地传播。

1.1ObjectoftheStudy

TheFortressBesieged,writtenbyQianZhongshuin1947,isafantasticsatiricnovelinthehistoryofChinesemodernandcontemporaryliterature.Thenovelisnotonlypopularforitsthemebutalsoforitsvividandinterestinglanguage.Qianputsalargenumberofvariousfiguresofspeechintouse.Yangobserves,“Thestatisticsshowthattherearetotally635metaphorsinthisnovel,includingplentyofcommonmetaphorsandsomeuniqueonesthatcomefromwriter’sownlifeexperience”（2011:

2）.Theseuniquemetaphorshavetwofunctionsinthenovel:

ironicfunctionandcognitivefunction.Itisthesemetaphorsthatmakethenovelsospecial.

Thenovelistranslatedintomanylanguages.Themostwell-knownEnglishversionistranslatedbyJeanneKellyandNathanK.Mao.SincethisEnglishversionwaspublished,ithascaughtmanyscholars’eyes.Manyscholarsregarditasamodeltostudymetaphorsandtheyapplydifferenttheoriestotheresearchonit.SomescholarsstudytheclassificationofthemetaphorsinTheFortressBesieg
