自从有人类历史以来，人们就有聚会的要求。

考古学家在研究古文化遗迹时发现，人们经常在某些固定的场所聚会，共同探讨普遍关心的问题，如狩猎、战事、和谈部落事务等。

伴随着城市和经济的不断发展，会议的数量和规模也不断地增加和扩大，并逐渐发展成为旅游接待业的一门新兴产业。

Ascitiesbecamethehubofactivityforgeographicregionsandastransportationfromlocationtolocationimproved,theactivitytogatherforthediscussionofcommoninterestbecamemoreprevalent.Tradeassociationsaswellasprofessional,fraternalandreligiousorganizations1assembledtoaddressissuesrelevanttotheirmembership.Increasedassociationactivityledtotheneedformoremeetingsamongassociationmembers.In1914,theindustryfoundeditsfirstprofessionalorganizationintheformofInternationalAssociationofConventionandVisitorBureau（IACVB）2.

Attheverybeginning,hotelswerenotdesignedtohostgroupsandbasicallyhadnodesiretoplayanactiveroleinthisverydynamicsegmentoftheindustry.Itwasnotuntilhotelchains,suchasHolidayInn,Sheraton,Hilton,MarriottandHyatt,beganrecognizingtheimportanceofmeetings,conventionsandexpositionstotheireconomicwellbeingthathotelssolicitedgroupbusiness.Thesechainstookthepurelyfunctionalmeetingfacilitiesofthe1950sandbuiltupontheconceptandworkedwiththemeetingplannersandassociationexecutivestodesignstateoftheartmeetingfacilitiesfashionedtopromotemeetings,conventionsandexpositions.

Today,amajorsourceofrevenueforthetourismindustry3comesfromthemeeting,conventionandexhibitionsegmentoftheindustry.Ithasbecomeanexcitingandlucrativesegmentofthehospitalityindustry.

Ameetingisaconference,workshop,seminarorothereventdesignedtobringpeopletogetherforthepurposeofexchanginginformation.Meetingsdonotincludeexhibits.Anexpositionis“aneventdesignedtobringtogetherpurveyorsofproducts,equipmentandservicesinanenvironmentinwhichtheycandemonstratetheirproductsandservicestoagroupofattendeesataconventionortradeshow.”Whenmeetingsarecombinedwithexpositions,theeventiscalledaconvention.

Historically,themeetings,conventionsandexpositionsindustryhasmirroredthechangesintheoverallhospitalityindustry.Asthehospitalityindustrysawgreatincreaseinexpenditures,meetings,conventionsandexpositionsexperiencedgreatgrowthaswell.Withthemanychangesthehospitalityindustryhasundergoneinthepastyears,theimportanceofmeetings,conventionsandexpositionshasbecomemorerecognized.Theneedtocommunicatewithoneanotherfacetofacehasbeenthedrivingforcebehindthegrowthofthisindustry.

Therearefourmajorcomponentsoftheconventionsindustry:

plannersandthegroupstheyrepresent,hostfacilities,servicesandexhibitors.Plannersareindividualsorgroupsthatplanmeetings,conventionsandexpositions.Plannersfallintoanumberofcategories.Therearecorporatemeetingplannerswhoworkexclusivelyforacorporation,associationmeetingplannerswhowereexclusivelyforanassociation,orindependentmeetingplannerswhocontractouttheirservicestobothassociationsandcorporations.Associationmanagementcompaniesaswellastravelagenciesarealsobecomingmoreactiveinplanningmeetings,conventionsandexpositions.

Servicesrefertoallthoseindividualsandorganizationsthatprovidesupportforthemeetings,conventionsandexpositionssegmentoftheindustry.Servicesuppliersinclude,butarenotlimitedto,groundhandlers,destinationmanagementcompanies,entertainers,decorators,transportationcompanies,attractionsandtourguidecompanies.

Exhibitorsarefinanciallyintertwinedwithallsegmentsofthemeetings,conventionsandexpositionsindustry.Theyprovidemuchoftherevenueneededforplannerstoholdmeetings,conventionsandexpositions.
