ShelleyFisherFishkinishelpingtodirecttheChineseRailroadWorkersinNorthAmericaProjectatStanfordUniversity.Shesaid,“ManyoftheChineseworkerswhocametoworkonthetranscontinentalandotherrailroadsreturnedtoChinaaftertheirworkwasdoneandcreatedfamiliesthere.SomeofthemsettledinAmericaandcreatednewfamilies,buttheyhadfamilieswhotheyleftwhentheycamehereandtheymayhavedescendantsinChina.〞

China’seducationperformance—atleastincitiessuchasShanghaiandHongKong—seemstobeasspectacularasthecountry’sfastgrowingeconomy.
Certainlyboththeseopenandoutward-lookingcitiesconsidereducationtobeimportantandarewillingtoadoptthebesteducationalpracticesfromaroundtheworldtoensuresuccess.InHongKong,educationaccountsformorethanone-fifthofentiregovernmentspendingeveryyear.
“ShanghaiandHongKongaresmalleducationsystems,withaconcentrationofideas,manpowerandresourcesforeducation,〞saysProfCheng.
Underthebanner“Firstclasscity,firstclasseducation〞,Shanghaisetaboutsystematicallyre-equippingclassroom,upgradingschoolsandimprovingthecurriculuminthelastdecade.
