Peltzmansaidthatpeopledrovemoredangerouslywhentheyworeseatbelts(安全带).Drivingalargefour-wheeldrivevehiclehasasimilareffectondrivers'

behavior.Becausedriversoflargevehiclessituphigherandcanseebetter,theyfeeltheycanmakebetterjudgmentswhentheydrive.Theyarebetterprotectedinaccidents,sotheyactmoredangerously.Thismakesdrivingmorehazardoustootherdrivers.

ThePeltzmanEffectisn'

tjustlimited(限于)todriving.In1972,theAmericanFoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)passedalawrequiringchildsafetycapsonmostmedicinebottles.Thesafetycapsweredesignedtopreventchildrenfromaccidentallytakingthemedicine,especiallypainkillerssuchasaspirin.Requiringsafetycapssoundedlikeagreatidea,buttherewasanunexpectedsideeffect.Becausethesafetycapsaresohardtotakeoff,somepeopleleavethemoffaltogether.Worse,someparentsleavethebottleswherekidscanreachthembecausetheyfeelthatitissafebecauseofthecap.AstudyonthePeltzmanEffectshowedthatmorethan3,500childrenhavebeenharmedbyaspirinbecauseofthesafetycaps.
