AnewstudyfromtheGeorgiaInstituteofTechnologyfindsthatolderandyoungerpeoplehavevaryingpreferencesaboutwhattheywouldwantapersonalrobottolooklike.Andtheychangetheirmindsbasedonwhattherobotissupposedtodo.
Participantswereshownaseriesofphotosportrayingeitherrobotic,humanormixedhuman-robotfacesandwereaskedtoselecttheonethattheywouldpreferfortheirrobot’sappearance.Mostcollege-agedadultsinthestudypreferredaroboticappearance.Howevernearly60percentofolderadultssaidtheywouldwantarobotwithahumanface,andonly6percentofthemchoseonewithamixedhuman-robotappearance.Butthepreferencesinbotharegroupsweredifferentwhenparticipantsweretoldtherobotwasassistingwithpersonalcare,chores,socialinteractionorforhelpingtomakedecisions.
Preferenceswerelessstrongforhelpingwithchores,althoughthemajorityofolderandyoungerparticipantschosearobotwitharoboticface.Butfordecision-makingtasks,suchasgettingadviceforwheretoinvestmoney,youngerparticipantstendedtoselectamixedhuman-robotappearance.Aroboticfacewastheirleastfavoredchoiceforthistask.Olderadultsgenerallypreferredahumanface.
