Mother“washumbledbya13-year-old.”AsahopelesslyWesternmothermarriedinto
aChinesefamilylivinginanareathatgeneratesimmigrantprodigiesasreliably
ascloudsproducerain,Iwaseagertoobservethecomeuppanceofaparentwhothought
shehadalltheanswers.
And,inmanyways,TigerMotherdidnotdisappoint.Atnight,Iwouldnudgemy
husbandawaketoreadhimsomeofitsmorerevealingpassages,suchaswhenauthor
AmyChuathreatenedtoburnherolderdaughter'
sstuffedanimalsifthechilddidn'

improveherpianoplaying.WhatChineseparentsunderstand,Chuawrites,isthat
nothingisfununtilyou'
regoodatit.Byday,Iwouldtellmyowntwodaughters
abouthowChuathrewunimpressivebirthdaycardsbackatheryounggirlsandordered
themtomakebetterones.Foramotherwhosehalf-Chinesechildrenplayedoutside
whilethekidsofstricterimmigrantneighborscouldbeheardlaboringoverthe
violinandpiano,thebookcanbewickedlygratifying.Readingitislikesecretly
peeringintothehomeofacontrolling,obsessiveyetcompulsivelyhonest
mother—onewhosometimesmakestherestofuslookgood,iflessremarkableand
withlessimpressiveoffspring.Doesbecomingsuper-accomplishedmakeupforyears
ofstressThat'
ssomethingmydaughtersandIwillneverfindout.
Chuaisalawprofessorandauthoroftwoacclaimedbooksoninternationalaffairs,
thoughreadersofTigerMothergetonlyaglimpseofthatpartofherlife,with
airy,tossedoff-linessuchasMeanwhile,IwasstillteachingmycoursesatYale
andfinishingupmysecondbookwhilealsoravelingcontinuously,givinglectures
aboutdemocratizationandethnicconflict.Herthirdbookabandonsglobalconcerns
tofocusintimatelyonChua'
sattempttoraisehertwodaughtersthewayherimmigrant
parentsraisedher.Therewouldbenoplaydatesandnosleepovers:
