Gold’steamcomparedtask-switchingspeedsforyoungerandolderadults,knowingtheywouldfindslowerspeedsintheolderpopulationbecauseofpreviousstudies.However,theyfoundthatolderadultswhospoketwolanguageswereabletoswitchmentalactivitiesfasterthanthosewhodidn’t.Thestudyonlylookedatlife-longbilinguals(会说两种语言的人),definedinstudyaspeoplespeakingasecondlanguagedailysincetheywereatleast10yearsold.
Goldandhisteamasked30people,eitherbilingualormonolingual(只懂一种语言人),tohaveaseriesoftests.Theyfoundthatbilingualpeoplewerenotonlyabletoswitchtasksfastertheyhaddifferentbrainactivitythantheirmonolingualpeers.
Kristinacalledbilingualism“abeautifulnaturalexperiment”,becausepeoplegrowupspeakingtwolanguages,andstudieshaveshownthattheygetcertaincognitivebenefitsfromswitchingbetweenlanguagesanddeterminingwhichtorespondwithbasedonwhat'

GoldsaidhegrewupinMontreal,wherehespokeFrenchatschoolandEnglishathome,promptingrelativestoquestionwhetherhisFrenchlanguageimmersionwouldsomehowhinder(阻碍)hisabilitytolearnEnglish.
