Gold’steamcomparedtask-switchingspeedsforyoungerandolderadults,knowingtheywouldfindslowerspeedsintheolderpopulationbecauseofpreviousstudies.However,theyfoundthatolderadultswhospoketwolanguageswereabletoswitchmentalactivitiesfasterthanthosewhodidn’t.Thestudyonlylookedatlife-longbilinguals（会说两种语言的人）,definedinstudyaspeoplespeakingasecondlanguagedailysincetheywereatleast10yearsold.

Goldandhisteamasked30people,eitherbilingualormonolingual（只懂一种语言人）,tohaveaseriesoftests.Theyfoundthatbilingualpeoplewerenotonlyabletoswitchtasksfastertheyhaddifferentbrainactivitythantheirmonolingualpeers.
