Smell

Smell,asameansofnonverbalcommunication,isimportant.Odorcommunicatesnotonlywhenwearefacetofacewithanotherperson,butalsowhentheotherpersonisnotpresent.Peoplefromdifferentculturesmayhavedifferentattitudestowardbodyodors.

Othercultureshavequitedifferentconceptsofnaturalodors;

theyconsiderthemasnormalandbelievethatitisanactoffriendshipto“breathethebreath”ofthepersonwithwhomtheyconverseandtofeeltheirpresencebysmelling.Forexample,Arabsdon’tseemtofeelcomfortableunlesstheycansmelleachother.WhenArabstalk,theyvirtuallyenvelopeachotherintheirbreath.Smellingthenaturalbodyodorsofone’sfriendisdesirable;
