Homer’sepicsincludeIliadandOdyssey,whicharebothsaidtobeHomer’swork.Thethemesoftwoepicsfocusonsingingthepraiseoftheheroesinclansociety.ThekeynoteofIliadregardswarasajustifiableandgloriousevent.Simultaneously,thepoetrydescribesthecrueltyofwarvaguely.Inthisdegree,Iliaddenouncedthenegativeeffectonwhichmayhavetotheinnocentsocialclass.

ThelanguageusedbyHomerisanarchaicversionofIonicGreek,withadmixturesfromcertainotherdialects,suchasAeolicGreek.ItlaterservedasthebasisofEpicGreek,thelanguageofepicpoetry,typicallyindactylichexameter.

Astotheparentage,accordingtoOdyssey,hisfatherisLaertesandhismotherisAnticleia,althoughtherewasanon-HomerictraditionthatSisyphuswashistruefather.

ThenameOdysseusisderivedfromtheverboussomai,whichmeans“tobewrothagainst”.HeisalsoknownasUlyssesinLatin.
