Comingfromacompanythathas“invent”aspartofourbrand,aspartofoursignature,IsometimesbeginspeechesbysayingthatinventionandinnovationhavebeenparttheDNAofHP’sformorethansixtyyears.Ourscientistsandengineerstodaygeneratemorethan11patentseveryday.Wespendmorethan4billiondollarsayearonR&
D.Soinventionispartofourfutureaswellaspartofourpast.
ThatallsoundsprettyimpressiveuntilyouthinkaboutChina’shistory,andyourealizethat“invent”hasbeenpartofChina’sDNAformorethan5,000years.EveryschoolchildinAmericalearnsaboutChina’smanygiftstothisworld—fromtheinventionofpaper,togunpowder,thewheelbarrow,thecompass,acupuncture—rightuptothefirstblastfurnaceandthefirstuseofironcasting,backinthesixthcentury.
Asacompany,weactuallyatHPareespeciallyindebtedtoamannamedBiSheng,whohadthevisionin1045A.D.toinventtheworld’sfirstmovabletype,whichledtoitsfirstprinter—afull300yearsbeforeGutenberg'
sinventionofmovabletypechangedtheWesternworld.Sotoday,IwanttoissueabelatedthankyoutoBiShengforhavingtheforesighttosetinmotionaprocessthatwouldeventuallyleadtoa20billionbusinessforHP.
ThatgreattraditionofinventionandinnovationhascertainlybeencarriedonhereatTsinghua,wheresomeofthefinestinstructorsintheworldtodayareworkingtotrainsomeofthefinestscientistsandengineers.It’sabitironicthatthisschoolwasoriginallyestablishednearly100yearsagoasaplacewhereyoungChinesecouldgotoAmericaandotherwesternnationstolearnfromus.Today,therestoftheworld,Ithink,hasmuchtolearnfromChina.
It’salwaysstruckmethattheprocessofinventionisalittlebitliketheprocessofbeingacollegestudent.Afterall,asaninventor,yougointoalabandyouhaveastrongbutperhapsvagueideaofwhatyouwanttoachieve.Byworkinghard,experimenting,learningalongtheway,andusingasaguidetheworkofthosewhowentbeforeyou–youadvancedowntheroadtowardsdiscovery.Youmaynotendupwhereyoustarted–orevenwhereyouexpected,butifyouaresuccessful,thenbeginsanotherdifficultprocessoftryingtomakeyourinventionworkintheworldaroundyou.
Likeinventors,manyofyouhavetraveledthesameroadoverthelastfouryearshereinuniversity.Thepersonyouaretoday–thegoalsyouhavetoday,thedreamsyouhavetoday–maybedifferentfromtheonesyouhadwhenyoufirstcamehere.Andnow,youarebecomingpreparedtotakeallthatyou’velearnedhereandmakeitworkintheworldaroundyou.
Ibelievethatyoungpeoplearegraduatingtodayintoaworldfilledwithmorehopeandmorepromisethaninanyothertimeinourhistory.Iknowsometimesthatmightsoundstrange,becausewethinkalwaysofthedangersandchallengesintheworldaroundus.ButIhavestudiedhistoryinmylife.Idobelievethisisaneraofgreatpromiseandgreatopportunity.
Forthoseofyouwhohaveseenourads,youknowthattheyendwiththephrase,“everythingispossible.”Acynicmightsaythatjustamarketingslogan–butIactuallybelievethat.Idon’tthinkeveryiseasy,Idon'
tthinkthingshappensrightaway.ButIdothinkthateverythingispossible.
Foralltheremarkableadvancementswehaveseeninrecentyears,nothinghasmatchedthepowerofinformationtechnologytochangeourworldforthebetter.Andinthenextdecade,itwilltakeustoplaceswecanonlyimaginetoday.
Chinaistheworld’sfastest-growingeconomy;
theworld’sleaderindirectforeigninvestment;
oneoftheworld’slargesttradingnations--aleaderonboththeproductionandconsumptionofinformationtechnology.Chinaispoisedtoplayahugepartinthatfuture–andthestudentswhograduatefromTsinghuaUniversityarepoisedtoshapethefutureoftechnologylikeneverbefore.Nowlikeanyuniversitystudents,Iknowforyoutheroadaheadhasmuchuncertainty.ButifthereisonethingIhavelearnedinthepast20yearsinthisindustry,itisthattheprinciplethatyouhavelearnedinsidethewallsofTsinghua,theprincipleismoretrueoutsidetheuniversitythaninside.TheprincipleIamspeakingofisthis:
