Abstract

Thenewanddisruptivetechnologyofsmarthomeapplications（hereafterreferredtoasapps）basedonInternetofThings（loT）islargelylimitedandscattered.Toprovidevaluableinsightsintotechnologicalenvironmentsandsupportresearchers,wemustunderstandtheavailableoptionsandgapsinthislineofresearch.Thus,inthisstudy,areviewisconductedtomaptheresearchlandscapeintoacoherenttaxonomy.Weconductafocusedsearchforeveryarticlerelatedto

（1）smarthomes,

（2）apps,and（3）loTinthreemajordatabases,namely,WebofScience,ScienceDirect,andIEEEExplore.ThesedatabasescontainliteraturefocusingonsmarthomeappsusingloT.Thefinaldatasetresultingfromtheclassificationschemeincludes229articlesdividedintofourclasses.ThefirstclasscomprisesreviewandsurveyarticlesrelatedtosmarthomeloTapplications.ThesecondclassincludespapersonloTapplicationsandtheiruseinsmarthometechnology.Thethirdclasscontainsproposalsofframeworkstodevelopandoperateapplications.ThefinalclassincludesstudieswithactualattemptstodevelopsmarthomeloTapplications.Wethenidentifythebasiccharacteristicsofthisemergingfieldinthefollowingaspects:

motivationofusingloTinsmarthomeapplications,openchallengeshinderingutilization,andrecommendationstoimprovetheacceptanceanduseofsmarthomeapplicationsinliterature.

1.Introduction

AsanimportantcomponentoftheInternetofThings（loT）,smarthomesserveuserseffectivelybycommunicatingwithvariousdigitaldevicesbasedonloT.Intheidealversionofawiredfuture,alldevicesinsmarthomescommunicatewithoneanotherseamlessly.SmarthometechnologybasedonloThaschangedhumanlifebyprovidingconnectivitytoeveryoneregardlessoftimeandplace（Gaikwadetal.,2015;

Samuel,2016）.Homeautomationsystemshavebecomeincreasinglysophisticatedinrecentyears.Thesesystemsprovideinfrastructureandmethodstoexchangealltypesofapplianceinformationandservices（Kimetal.,2015）.AsmarthomeisadomainofloT,whichisthenetworkofphysicaldevicesthatprovideelectronic,sensor,software,andnetworkconnectivityinsideahome.Smarthomesareautomatedbuildingswithinstalleddetectionandcontroldevices,suchasairconditioningandheating,ventilation,lighting,hardware,andsecuritysystems.Thesemodemsystems,whichincludeswitchesandsensorsthatcommunicatewithacentralaxis,aresometimescalled"

Since2010,researchershaveanalyzedloT-basedsmarthomeapplicationsusingseveralapproaches.Regardlessoftheircategory,existingresearcharticlesfbcusonthechallengesthathinderthefullutilizationofsmarthomeloTapplicationsandproviderecommendationstomitigatetheseproblems.Researchonsmarthomeapplicationsisdynamicanddiverse.Thissurveyaimstoprovidevaluableinsightsintotechnologicalenvironmentsandsupportresearchersbyunderstandingtheavailableoptionsandgapsinthislineofresearch.Itaimstoshedlightontheeffortsofresearchersinresponsetonewanddisruptivetechnology,maptheresearchlandscapeintoacoherenttaxonomy,anddeterminethefeaturesthatcharacterizethisemerginglineofresearchinsmarthometechnology.Thispaperisorganizedasfollows.InSection1,loTanditsapplicationsinsmarthomesareintroduced.InSection2,theresearchmethods,scope,literaturesources,andstepsinfilteringresearcharticlesaredescribed.Theresearchlandscapebasedonliteratureisalsomappedintoacoherenttaxonomy.InSection3,theresultsandstatisticalinformationofthefinalsetofarticlesinthisstudyarereviewed.InSection4,thebenefitsandchallengesextractedfromarticlesonloT-basedsmarthomesfrom2010to2016arediscussedandclassified.InSection5,theconclusionofthisreviewispresented.2.Method
