Abstract
Companionanimalshaveestablishedspecialrelationshipswithhumans,asdemonstratedbymanystudiesdescribingtheirabilitiesandbondstocommunicatewithhumans.Inthisquestionnaire-basedstudy,weexploredowners’viewsofpetsintermsoftheiremotionalandintellectualfunctionsandtheirrelationshipwithowners,andcomparedtheresultsbetweencatownersanddogowners.Wefoundthatalthoughbothtypesofownersmostoftenregardedtheirpetsas“familymembers,”thistendencywasweakerincatowners.Catownersalsoscoredsignificantlylowerthandogownersforsomeemotionsandintellecttheythoughttheirpetsmighthave.Additionally,catownerswhoregardtheircatsasfamilymemberstendtoattribute“compassion”totheircatsmorestronglythancatownerswhoregardtheirpetsasnon-family.Thisstudyrevealedthatsomeaspectsofcatowners’viewsoftheirpetsdifferfromthoseofdogowners.Thesefindingmayhelpustobetterunderstandourheterospecificcompanionsandestablishgoodrelationshipswiththem.
