1HumorIllustrationDesignasaSolutionMechanismforVariousProblems
Inapowerfulandfunction-orientedworld,itismoreimportantthanevernottocomeshortonemotionsandhumanitywhenitcomestodesignandillustration.Themotto“Sexsells”,isanevidentexampleofhowhumorfunctionsinoursociety;
atfirstthedirectnessofthismottoseemscrudeandgrabsourattention,theniteasesandbringsaboutalaugh.Humorisaconceptthatcanbeusedtoreachaudienceswithinseconds,anddrawstheminthroughamusementandemotionalconnection.Illustrationisawaytodepicthumor;
itisanidealmeansofexpressionasthemescanbeapprehendedandunderstoodwithnospecificboundary.Inotherwords,illustrationallowsindividualopinionsandviewsoncertainthemesthroughimagination.

Sincethebeginningofmycareerasafreelanceillustratorin2008,Ihavebeeninterestedininnovativewaystoapplytheconceptof“HumorIllustrationDesign”.IworkedtogetherwithahistoriannamedNorbertParschalkonmyfirstproject.Itwasbasedontheideaofhistoricalstorytellingthroughanewstyle.Themainideawasto

create“comics”,inwhichhistoryandhumorwerecombined,withoutquestioningthesignificanceandplausibilityofagivenstorie’scontents.
ThefirststoryItransformedintoacomicwasthebiographyof“AndreasHofer”,alocalfreedomfighterandherointheSouthTirol(asmallregionofItaly,farnorthintheAlps)(Fig.1showsanexerptfromthebook).InthisregionofItaly–inmyhomel-and–,thestatusandimportanceofAndreasHofercanbecomparedtothatofAbra-hamLincolnintheUSA.IdesignedtheillustrationsandNorbertParschalkhelpedmeformulatethetexts.

Buttherewereconsequencesthatcamewithanimatingthishistoricalfigureandthingswentthroughtheroofwhenthestorybookwasfirstpublishedandreleased;
asquoted,onecannotmake“Serioushistoricalfiguresintocomicalheroes.”Howeverthebookwassoonacceptedandbecameabestseller.Italsoservesasaneducationaltoolformanymiddleschoolstudentsandanumberofothersingeneral.
Theconceptofthisprojectwassimpleandcamedowntoonequestionandgoal:
HowcouldIgetpeoplefromeachagegroupwhowerehistorically‘uninterested’,towanttoexperienceandlearnhistory?
Thesolutionlayinthecombinationoftextsandmatchingcartoonsandcomicstrips;
Irecreatedeachstorybasedonthiscombination,withtheintentionoffindingawaytogivepeoplenooptionbuttolearnthehistory;
theywouldhavetoreadthetextsinordertounderstandtheillustrationstheywerelooking.Andthisworked!
Idesignedthehumorouselementsofmystorybookswiththepurposeof“reward-ing”thereader,whohadbeen“forced”todosomethingundesireable(i.e.toread)inordertounderstandthestory.Thisconcepttakesafterthemotto:
“Youcanlearnandalsolaugh!
”.Ididn’twanttoundermineorquestiontheseriousnessofthebiogra-phieshowever,andso,Ionlychosescenesthatareeitherprovenorunverifiable.
Thisishowthesubtitleofmybookseries,“AnIllustradedHistory”,wasfounded.Basedonthissubtitle,mybookscanbeconsidered“subjectivehistory”ratherthanas“joke”or“satire”.
Myworkfocusesonandisdemonstratedthroughtheconceptof“humanity”,whichisthecentralthemeandacrucialbuildingblockinthethoughtsandprocedures
thatgointomyideas,textsandillustrations.Inthesere-createdstories,myintentionisforheroestobeseenashumansthathavestrengthsandweaknesses!
