WIRELESSLAN
Injustthepastfewyears,wirelessLANshavecometooccupyasignificantnicheinthelocalareanetworkmarket.Increasingly,organizationsarefindingthatwirelessLANsareanindispensableadjuncttotraditionalwiredLANs,astheysatisfyrequirementsformobility,relocation,adhocnetworking,andcoverageoflocationsdifficulttowire.Asthenamesuggests,awirelessLANisonethatmakesuseofawirelesstransmissionmedium.Untilrelativelyrecently,wirelessLANswerelittleused;thereasonsforthisincludedhighprices,lowdatarates,occupationalsafetyconcerns,andlicensingrequirements.Astheseproblemshavebeenaddressed,thepopularityofwirelessLANshasgrownrapidly.
Inthissection,wefirstlookattherequirementsforandadvantagesofwirelessLANs,andthenpreviewthekeyapproachestowirelessLANimplementation.WirelessLANsApplications
