Weareallinthepositionofthefarmer.Ifweplantagoodseed,wereapagoodharvest.Ifourseedispoorandfullofweeds,wereapauselesscrop.Ifweplantnothingatall,weharvestnothingatall.

Iwantthefuturetobebetterthanthepast.Idon’twantitcontaminatedbythemistakesanderrorswithwhichhistoryisfilled.Weshouldallbeconcernedaboutthefuturebecausethatiswherewewillspendtheremainderofourlives.

Thepastisgoneandstatic.Nothingwecandowillchangeit.Thefutureisbeforeusanddynamic.Everythingwedowillaffectit.Eachdaybringswithitnewfrontiers,inourhomesandinourbusinesses,ifwewillonlyrecognizethem.Wearejustatthebeginningoftheprogressineveryfieldofhumanendeavor.

Thereareyoungmenwhodonotwork,buttheworldisnotproudofthem.Itdoesnotknowtheirnames,even.Nobodylikesthem;thegreat,busyworlddoesnotknowthattheyarethere.Sofindoutwhatyouwanttobeanddo,andtakeoffyourcoatandmakeadustintheworld.Thebusieryouare,thelessharmyouwillbeapttogetinto,thesweeterwillbeyoursleep,thebrighterandhappieryourholidays,andthebettersatisfiedwilltheworldbewithyou.

Beingunhappyislikeaninfectionsdisease;itcausespeopletoshrinkawayfromthesufferer.Hesoonfindshimselfalone,miserableandembittered.Thereis,however,acuresosimpleastoseem,atfirstglance,ridiculous:

ifyoudon’tfeelhappy,pretendtobe!

Itworks.Beforelongyouwillfindthatinsteadofrepellingpeople,youattractthem.youdiscoverhowdeeplyrewardingitistobethecenterofwiderandwidercirclesofgoodwill.

Thenthemake-believebecomesareality.Youpossessthesecretofpeaceofmind,andcanforgetyourselfinbeingofservicetoothers.

Beinghappy,onceitisrealizedasadutyandestablishedasahabit,opensdoorsintounimaginablegardensthrongedwithgratefulfriends.

Menoftendiscovertheiraffinitytoeachotherbythelovetheyeachhaveforabook.Thebookisatruerandhigherbondofunion.Mencanthink,feel,andsympathizewitheachotherthroughtheirfavoriteauthor.Theyliveinhimtogether,andhe,inthem.

Agoodbookisoftenthebesturnofalifeenshriningthebestthatlifecouldthinkout,fortheworldofaman’slifeis,forthemostpart,buttheworldofhisthoughts.Thusthebestbooksaretreasuriesofgoodwords,thegoldenthoughts,which,rememberedandcherished,becomeourconstantcompanionsandcomforters.

Bookspossessanessenceofimmortality.Theyarebyfarthemostlastingproductsofhumaneffort.Templesandstatuesdecay,butbookssurvive.Timeisofnoaccountwithgreatthoughts,whichareasfreshtodayaswhentheyfirstpassedthroughtheirauthors’mindsagesago.Whatwasthensaidandthoughtstillspeakstousasvividlyaseverfromtheprintedpage.

Booksintroduceintothebestsociety;theybringusintothepresenceofthegreatestmindsthathaveeverlived.Wehearwhattheysaidanddid;weseethemasiftheywerereallyalive;wesympathizewiththem,enjoywiththem,grievewiththem;theirexperiencebecomesours,andwefeelasifwewereinameasureactorswiththeminthesceneswhichtheydescribe.
