Abouttwentyyearsagobeforegoingonaresearchtrip,IvisitedAnchorage,thelargestcityinAlaska.Itwasthenasmallcitywithapopulationofmoreorless40,000,surroundedbyforestsandmountains.WhenImadearecenttriptoupdatemyearlierwork,Ifoundamazingchanges.Anchoragenowhas180,000people,morethanfourtimesasmanyasin1960.There’rehighbuildings,shoppingcenters,andalltheaccompanyingcrowdsandtrafficjams.Theforestsandmountainsarestillnearby,buttheyseemreducedbythecity’sgreatsize.Thediscoveryofoilin1968inthenorthofAlaskacausedmanyofthesechanges.TheconstructionoftheacrossAlaskaoilpipelinebroughtincreasedwealthtothestate.However,therehavebeentoomanypeoplemovingtoAlaskainaveryshortperiodoftime.Thereisnotenoughhousingandtransportation.IthinkAlaskamustmakeimportantdecisionssoon.Alaskansneedtodecidehowtodeveloptheirnaturalresourcesandmineralswellwithoutdestroyingnatureandharmingthewildlife.
