Preface

Ibelievetherearethreedifferenttypesofphotographers:

technical,artistic,andthosethathavegoodartisticvisionandcombinestechnicalknowledgetoachievethatvision.Noneisrightorwrong.Allarejustdifferentinapproachandexecution.

ThefirstphotographerIevermentoredwasanamazinglyartisticwoman.Shehadaknackforseeingthingslikeno-onehadeverseen.Shewasalsoavoraciouslearnerandsheaskedmeforhelponthetechnicalsideofthingstomakeherselfbetter.

Istartedspoutingallthenumbers,allthetheories,andallthescience.Theresponse?

Ineededtochangemyteachingmethodstofitthewayshethinks.SothatiswhatIwilldowiththisarticle–explainthetechnologywithoutthemathandnumbersandtheories.

TheTriangleofExposure

Therearethreemainingredientstogoodexposure:

Aperture,ShutterSpeed,andISO.Okay,yesIsaidnomath,butIwilluseabitofgeometrytoillustratetheeffectthatthethreecomponentsofexposurehaveoneachother.IamcertainlynotthefirsttothinkofthisasatrianglebutIdothinkitisthebestrepresentation

Asyoucansee,alltheelementsofexposurehaveaneffectontheothers–sowiththatinmindweneedtoknowthehowsandwhysofallthedifferentelementstobestunderstandhowtogetbothagoodexposureandthedesiredresultsinourphotographs.

Nowyoumayask;“Whydoweneedtohavealldifferentsettingsforexposure.Whyisn’ttherejustone?
